Transcript Patricia Coughlin (Della Selva), Ph.D., is a licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 35 years of clinical experience. She has held faculty positions at Northwestern University Medical School, Albany Medical College, and the Thomas Jefferson School of Medicine. Currently she is Clinical Faculty at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Over the past 20 years she has written professionally, given presentations at professional conferences and conducted workshops for mental health professionals internationally. Currently, she is conducting training groups in New York, Australia, Denmark, and Poland. Her first book, Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy: Theory and Technique, is considered a classic in the field. Dr. Coughlin’s book Lives Transformed was written in collaboration with Dr. David Malan, and published in 2006 by Karnac Books. Her newest book, Maximizing Therapeutic Effectiveness in Dynamic Psychotherapy, was published in July 2016 by Routledge. Dr. Coughlin obtained her undergraduate degree from the Honors College at Ohio University (1976), where she graduated Summa Cum Laude and won the Distinguished Professor Award for outstanding undergraduate student in Psychology. She went on to obtain a Masters degree (1978) and Doctorate (1980) in Clinical Psychology from Syracuse University. Her residency was completed at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. Upon completion of her residency, Dr. Coughlin was asked to join the faculty and was named Chief Psychologist of the Rehabilitation Program at the Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. She maintained a private practice in Chicago from 1981 through 1987. Dr. Coughlin moved to Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1987 and began her training in Intensive Short term Dynamic Psychotherapy in 1988 — first at the Ontario Institute, then at the Institute in Rochester, New York; and finally in Montreal, Quebec with Dr. Davanloo, the creator of this method of psychotherapy. Dr. Coughlin currently maintains a private practice in Albany, New York. Edward G. Shaw, MD, MA, is dually trained as a physician (MD, Rush Medical College, 1983, Internship/Residency, Mayo Clinic, 1987) and a mental health counselor (MA, Wake Forest University, 2010). He was the primary care partner for his wife, Rebecca, who was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease in 2007 and died after a nine-year battle. He was a practicing academic radiation oncologist for 23 years, specializing in the treatment of adults and children with brain cancer. He was also vice chairman of the Mayo Clinic radiation oncology department, chairman of the Wake Forest School of medicine radiation oncology department, and director of clinical research for their comprehensive cancer center. During his career as an oncologist, Dr. Shaw published 175 research articles, 25 book chapters, co-edited 2 books, and was the recipient of more than 21 million dollars in research grant funding, mostly from the National Cancer Institute. In 2010, inspired by Rebecca’s journey, Dr. Shaw’s medical interest shifted to dementia diagnosis and treatment, and with additional training in mental health counseling, he founded the Memory Counseling Program, part of the Section on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest School of Medicine / Wake Forest Baptist Health in Winston-Salem, NC, which serves individuals, couples, and families affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. A career-long cognitive function researcher, Dr. Shaw’s expertise on brain anatomy and function, as well as mental health diagnosis and treatment, were invaluable assets to the writing of “Keeping Love Alive As Memories Fade: The Five Love Languages and the Alzheimer’s Journey” (Northfield Publishing/October 2016), which he co-authored with Deborah Barr, MA and Gary Chapman, PhD.
