He became king at the age of fifteen, so a regent helped him rule during the early years of his reign. One of the greatest influences in Rama V's life was Anna Leonowens, a European tutor brought in to give him a Western education. Anna and his father are portrayed in the well-known Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I." Anna taught him a great deal about Western culture, including slavery, and he abolished the practice of slavery during his reign. His decision to abolish slavery was as a result of a desire to prevent a conflict like the Civil War in the United States. He even started putting some parts of a Western government in place, using the privy council in the United Kingdom as a model. He also initiated a number of other reforms based on the influence of Western countries. He opened the Royal Military Academy to train his troops on Western methods of fighting and sent princes to the United Kingdom to receive their educations. During Rama V's reign, the first railroad opened, connecting Bangkok to Korat. Also, the first power plant in Siam began to produce energy, turning on electric lights along the roadways. The first university ever founded in Thailand, Chulalongkorn University, was named after him.
