Directed by Shadi Abdel Salam, the movie stars Ahmed Marei, Ahmad Hegazi, Zouzou Hamdy El-Hakim, and Nadia Lufti. Set in 1881, during British rule in Egypt, Al-Mummia is based on the real-life story of the clan of Abd el-Rasuls. This clan was responsible for the theft and illegal sales of mummies discovered in a tomb by the village of Kurna. The Abd el-Rasuls clan is actually based on the exploits of the Horbat tribe, who were looting tombs at Deir al-Bahari. Eventually, fighting against the clan, one member goes to the authorities and aids the Antiquities department of the government in finding the mummies. While this film may seem like a straightforward heroic piece, it is a strong movie replete with important symbolism for Egyptians. The entire dialogue of the movie takes place in classical Arabic and the eerie music and dreamlike camera shots contribute to the ethereal quality of the movie. For Egyptians, Al-Mummia explores the search for an Egyptian identity that has been usurped, conquered, and colonized. The rural and urban conflicts and the probe into collusion with foreigners and colonizers are part of the queries about Egyptian identity.
