This is Hyunwoo Sun. Today I'd like to tell you about weddings in Korea. : I went to a friend's wedding last week. So I'd like to talk a little bit about wedding ceremonies in Korea. Actually, it's not about a traditional Korean wedding, because in Korea these days, most wedding are done in the Western fashion. There are some people who do a Western wedding and a traditional wedding one more time. But in fact, except for watching it on TV, I've never even been to a traditional Korean wedding. I'm sure I'll get a chance to go and see one someday, right? : But every time I go to a friend or relative's wedding, there's something I always find very strange. It's a very personal opinion of mine, but while it's their own wedding, not anybody else's, they never say anything from start to end, except for answering "Yes" to the question "Do you swear that you will love the bride?" : In Korea, after a wedding is over, the newly-weds usually go on their honeymoon trip right away, so they don't have much chance to talk to the people. So there is no time for the bride and the groom to talk about how they met, where they will live from now, or what kind of person their bride or groom is. So I think a wedding where people can just see you wearing a dress is a bit... strange. And of course this is just my personal opinion. Don't forget to stop by KoreanClass101.com for more great Korean Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Korean---- 조선 시대의 대표적인 명의 – 허준 안녕하세요, KoreanClass101.com 여러분! 여러분은 한국어 공부를 할 때 모르는 단어나 문법이 나오면 무엇을 찾나요? 저는 모르는 단어가 나오면 사전을, 그리고 모르는 문법이 나오면 문법 책을 봅니다. 그렇다면 옛날 사람들은 의학에 관한 모르는 문제가 생겼을 때 무엇을 찾았을까요? 오늘의 인물이 그 해답을 가지고 있습니다. 바로 조선 시대의 대표적인 명의 – 허준이지요. 허준의 대표적인 업적인 ‘동의보감’에 대해서 말하기에 앞서 우선 허준이란 인물에 대해서 이야기를 해 보도록 하겠습니다. 젊은 시절, 전라도 지역에서 활약했던 허준은 서울의 양반들 사이에서도 의술이 뛰어나다는 칭송을 많이 받았다고 합니다. 그 후, 고향을 떠나 그 시대에 최고의 명의라고 하는 ‘유의태’라는 스승으로부터 의학을 배웠다고 하는데요... 열심히 의술을 배운 허준은 가난하고 어려운 환자들의 병을 신분에 상관없이 모두 친절하게 치료해 줌으로써 그의 이름을 온 나라 전체에 널리 알렸다고 하네요. 여기 명의 허준과 그의 스승, 유의태, 에 관한 유명한 전설이 있습니다… 여러분 한번 들어보시겠습니까? 지금으로부터 400년 전, 의학 발전에 큰 뜻을 품고 있었던 한 스승은 그의 제자에게 올바른 해부술을 가르치기 위해 자신의 몸을 내줬다고 합니다. 엄청난 슬픔과 아픔을 머금고 제자의 해부는 시작되었으며 스승의 오장육부를 허준은 눈과 손 그리고 마음으로 하나하나 빠짐없이 정성을 다해 해부를 했다고 합니다. 이 전설이 진실인지 거짓인지 판별되지는 않았지만 이 전설만으로도 그 두 사람이 얼마나 한국 의학에 뜻이 깊었는지를 알 수 있을 것 같지 않으세요... 그런 허준이 16년간의 연구 끝에 25권의 방대한 한의서인 ‘동의보감’을 완성하게 되는데요… 그 ‘동의보감’은 당시 동양의학 전체를 간편하게 종합해 정리한 ‘의학 백과사전’이라고 불릴 만한 세계적인 문서라고 하네요. 이 동의보감의 특징은 한국 사람들의 체질에 맞는 치료법과 한국 땅에서 나는 약초 등을 연구하여 한국 한방 의학 발전에도 커다란 영향을 미쳤다고 합니다. 무엇보다도 이 ‘동의보감’은 일본과 중국에서도 많은 인정을 받기까지 해서 중국에서는 “동의보감은 백성을 보호해주는 신선의 경전이요, 의사들의 비법을 담은 문서이다”라고 극찬을 했을 정도라네요. 결코 소외된 일반 백성들을 잊지 않았던 명의, 허준. 그의 민중을 향한 사랑은 400년이 지난 오늘날의 의사들에게도 많은 교훈과 배움을 주고 있습니다. 저 또한 허준으로부터 배우고 느낀 점이 많이 있습니다. 허준의 의학에 대한 열정과 사랑은 저에게 한국어에 대한 열정과 사랑을 키우라고 말을 하고 있습니다. 그리고 허준의 민중을 향한 사랑은 저에게 한국어를 배우는 여러분들에 대한 사랑을 키우라고 말을 하고 있고요. What do you do when you study and you come across a word or grammar you don't know? When I come across a word I don't know, I look it up in a dictionary, and when I don't understand grammar, I read a book on grammar. Then what do you think the people of the past looked to when they didn't know medical terminology? Today's historical figure had the solution to that. He's the Joseon Era's representative and noted doctor, Heo Jun. Heo Jun's most well-known works and achievements were compiled in the medical book "Dongui Bogam" (the title literally means "Mirror of Eastern Medicine"), but before we talk more about that, I want to tell you about him as a person. As a child, he grew up in the Jeolla province, and even among Seoul's aristocrats, he was praised for excelling in medicine. After that, he left his hometown and learned medicine from the best doctor of that era, Yoo Ui-tae. Heo Jun was known all over Korea for treating patients who were poor and did not discriminate against someone's status. There's a famous legend about Heo Jun and his teacher, Yoo Ui-tae. Would you like to hear about it? Around four hundred years ago, Yoo did his best to give his pupil the proper education on anatomy for the progress of medicine. After enduring much sadness and pain, the pupil began his postmortem examination on the internal organs of his teacher. Apparently, he dissected all the parts of his teacher's body from his eyes to his hands with care and sincerity. No one can discern whether or not this legend is actually true, but the legend itself seems to be a testament to their commitment to advancing the Korean medical field. After sixteen years, Heo Jun was able to complete his medical book, "Dongui Bogam," which consists of twenty-five volumes. The book was considered an internationally renowned medical encyclopedia that conveniently put together and organized all of Eastern medicine. "Winter Sonata" is a drama that depicts a first love. Some of you probably have seen this drama. There is much beautiful imagery in the drama "Winter Sonata." Do you remember the place where Bae Yong-jun and Choi Ji-Uwalked on the snow side by side? Today, I will introduce you to the famous Nam-i-seom, which is famous as the shooting location of Winter Sonata. Nam-i-seom is a small landlocked island between Gyeong-gi-do and Gangwon-do. Because the scenery is beautiful, these days, it is used often as a drama, movie, or advertising shooting location, and foreign tourists are increasing greatly. It is very famous to locals as a spot for dates. In the past, it was reached by taking the Gyeongchun line, but now that a new line has been built, you can reach it by a subway. To get to Nam-i-seom, you can take a subway or train bound for Chuncheon and get off at Gapyeong Station. It takes about an hour from Seoul. You can see Nam-i-seom right away when you get off at Gapyeong Station, and you can get there by taking a boat bound for Nam-i-seom. You will know if you visit, but there are various spots on Nam-i-seom where "Winter Sonata" was shot. Don't you think the lyrics are so nice? Let's look at the first lyric. "I hold your small hands. I'm by your side. Don't think that you're alone. I'll be your strength." You'll probably get more strength from hearing those words rather than the person you said it to. The next lyric is "I'll help you take the heavy load off of your shoulders. Embrace this love, so that you won't have to shed tears." When life's load gets to be too much for you, and as you feel more and more tired, you'll both have more to share. As you have more of the load to share, your love can grow as well, right? If the load gets lighter, then there's no reason to share and rely on each other, so wouldn't it be better if the load were heavier? Forget about whether the load is heavy or light.
