Minding Michael Parts 1-5 - Qool Marv Recorded Live at Tillmans - June 27 2009 This was 5 different uploads back in 2009 when I didn't have the space on my podcast site to upload a file this large - now, when you're in the mood for a MJ marathon, you only have to click play once. Here are words from the original post: "Blessed with 48 hours before I’d get my chance to go public with my mix of MJ (actually, not even because I spent all Friday evening at my son’s uncle’s “bye high school/off to Princeton party), I had my mind on Michael. Roughly 75% of these songs, I’ve never played in public. This is my translation of Michael as a fan and DJ, as a boy who grew up with stronger together black family vibes and Black is Beautiful all up in my head, and as a man who still embraces that exuberant idealism by perpetuating it and sustaining it through the magic of the music in the mix. This is one of those ‘can’t remember what I did last night’ sets, although, my first and only glass of red wine didn’t happen until after 3:30am. Dressed in a white shirt, black necktie, black dress slacks, black shoes, & white socks – I was dress to thrill and did so with rhythmic reverence. Reverence describes the approach to laying out all of these songs over the course of a late night at Tillman’s. I wanted to be neat in the mix keeping in mind that I wanted most of these songs to play in their entirety. I’m not racing through these songs because I have five hours to work with in a lounge with a plush sound system. The atmosphere and design of Tillman’s wraps around you like a mahogany gold soul blanket. There are many instances where I nab the very last beat or vocal to bridge the song playing with the next up. I can't say I imagined 20 years of getting that call. At the Fahrenheit 451 party last night (May 8 '18) you all could hear how concept meets execution and you could see how the party went from warm glow to blazing hot. Once upon a time, about 13 years ago, or whenever the last season of the Sopranos was happening, I got the call to play the last gathering of that game changing series (I actually did a wrap party set up on set in Tony's kitchen once). After a few years of doing entertainment industry parties, I noticed a pattern... somewhat of a template or format that favored the safe and obvious. Humbly, I asked, during a meeting at HBO headquarters, if I could shatter that plain - buttressing my suggestion by offering to be the DJ equivalent of their classic motto from the 90s - "It's not TV it's HBO." "Your events should not sound like any other network's party, your parties should be as unique as your programming." (Paraphrasing) From there, I asked for the 1st 90mins of that Sopranos party to show what I had in mind. At some point Little Steven from Bruce Springsteen's band looked at me and gave me the thumbs up (I'd pitched doing a Classic Rock set to open the party) and the events folks noticed and also gave me thumbs up. Highlight of that night was having David Chase - creator of the Sopranos, come up on stage with his wife and they both told me how they noticed and enjoyed what I was doing with the music. Side note to that story is that the Sopranos party was on a Sunday...the night before, I was in Paris and the night before that, I was in Ireland... BTW, friends in Ireland have offered me space for my 1st lecture that will weave DJ culture with sociology and a bit of history.
