Black people have been fighting slavery and persecution since Caption Cuffe in 1780. The way has been long, but to borrow a Dr. Martin Luther King image, the arch bends towards justice.

Someday, Israel will declare that its apartheid state is finished, and give full citizenship rights to its Palestinian people. We as Americans can hasten that day by insisting that our Congress end support for Israel until it gives equal rights to all.

We can understand colonialism by looking at that 100 years of British occupation, with the racism as well as the terrible famines that killed over 16 million people. What is harder to understand is our own colonial wars of occupation, like Korea, Vietnam, Latin America and the Middle East.

The Civil Rights Era produced many great Black leaders, some of whom were murdered by state violence. Black Lives Matter is the next big step towards racial and economic justice.

Eventually all six were acquitted of the conspiracy charges. Daniel Berrigan said that doing the right thing was a privilege and not an obligation. I feel similarly that I am privileged to understand as well as act upon what is morally right.

6. Controlled Mass Media. Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

The US finally ended its occupation of Vietnam because so many American soldiers refused to fight. Will it take the same courage by our present military personnel to end the US occupations of Africa, Central America and the Middle East?
