Daniel J. Simone (Moderator for this Roundtable) earned his Ph.D. in History from this University of Florida. He then taught at Monmouth University before serving as curator at the NASCAR Hall of Fame from 2016-2021. Dr. Simone is on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Voting Committee and delivers presentations and academic papers at universities and automotive museums across the United States and Canada. He currently serves as program assistant at the New York Historical Society Museum & Library, where he is co-processing and researching the Women’s Sports Foundation Collection and conducting oral histories and developing content for a digital exhibition. The Symposium has provided a platform for excellent in-depth and thought-provoking presentations on the successes, struggles, and contributions of unheralded women racers and car owners across various auto racing disciplines. The green flag for this roundtable discussion will wave with panelists (Lauren Goodman, Buz McKim and Chris Lezotte) integrating these prior presentations into a brief historiographical discussion of women in motorsport. From there, the panelists will pull from their multi-disciplinary backgrounds and markedly different professional experiences and discuss why, where, and how they extended the boundaries of women in motorsports history scholarship. Finally, the audience will take the checkered flag with a challenge: to propose new themes and topics for future conversations, with an emphasis on the accomplishments women have made in motorsports without ever owning or taking the wheel behind race car. Studying art at the Pratt Institute in New York, our guest ended up working in the business world as the trade show manager for PRI - the Performance Racing Industry. For nearly a decade, she enjoyed everything about the racing industry and learned the value of good business acumen. Those early experiences helped shape the course of Lyn Hiner’s life as she decided to become a professional artist. To quote artist Rick Delanty - “Lyn Hiner’s paintings express the joie de vivre that she so vibrantly embodies in her personality. Included in that accomplishments like being crowned the first ALMS Women’s Global GT Series Champion, she was a Dodge Motorsports Team Driver, Completed in World Challenge, A NASA Bronze and Silver Medalist, as well as the 2nd woman in History to win the SCCA June Sprints… TWICE!.  She’s dedicated, fast and fearless; Cindi Lux is recognized as one of North America’s most talented and versatile drivers. And she’s here with us on Break/Fix to share her story!

Tonight’s guest has a background in art history, and began metal working when she discovered her passion for jewelry fabrication a few years ago. Today she makes sustainable uni-sex jewelry from the metal of luxury automobiles like  Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati, Mercedes-Benz, Lamborghini, Audi, Bentley, and more. Christi Schimpke’s, vision for CRASH materialized when she was working in her garage studio. During breaks from work, she observed the gorgeous cars that arrived for repair and wondered what happened to the cast-off metal. After many months of experimentation, she discovered her own unique process of cutting, bending, and sanding the scrap metal, and CRASH Jewelry started to take shape. Tonight’s guest received her Masters in Fine Arts in screenwriting from the College of Motion Pictures Arts at Florida State University. While volunteering at the Revs Institute in Naples, Florida, she encountered one of two Maseratis entered by Lucy Schell in the 1940 Indy 500. Wanting to know more, and diving head first into the research, Lauren Goodman became an overnight Petrol-head, now owns a sports car, and finds herself as the Supervising Producer for Media and Exhibitions at The Revs Institute! In the late 60’s New Zealand Motor Racing found itself in a bind. A few years earlier the Tasman Formula had been written to keep the local fleet of older 2.5 litre ex F1 cars in play. But now the more modern Formula 2, and even a few of the National Formula 1600 cc cars, were embarrassing the older ones. Visiting cars from Europe were either bigger engined ex 1.5 litre F1  cars, or new designs for the upcoming 3 litre F1 with capacity reduced engines, leaving Motor Sport New Zealand with a dilemma.  Whichever way you looked at it, it was going to be expensive. The SCCA appears have come to the same conclusion, with a 1967 amendment to their Formula A allowing Stock Block engines. The gate was open for others to do the same. At the last SCCA race of 1968 SCCA teams were approached, by a New Zealand delegation, to demonstrate their cars in New Zealand. Four teams took up the challenge, and the Kiwi’s liked the look of it. Within the year Formula A was a main stream category with Championships for it unfolding in Europe, South Africa, and the Tasman Countries. This presentation looks at the nitty gritty of that first Kiwi Formula A race, as seen through the eyes of this presenter in 1968.

Grassroots and bootstraps strategies were used by early racing pioneers in West Virginia beginning in the 1930s.  Tom Adamich, co-author of the auto racing entry in the West Virginia Encyclopedia and other related articles/publications will profile several events and individuals who innovated and dominated on the dirt tracks, ball diamonds, and other unique race courses that dot the hills and valleys of the great state of West Virginia. Tom Adamich has been a vehicle/motorsports historian since the early 1990s. He served as the project archivist at the Wills Sainte Claire Auto Museum (Marysville, Michigan) from 2009-2016.  He has been a frequent presenter at the Argetsinger Symposium – including presentations on Strategic Air Command (SAC) racing history, Cuban motorsports history, and Formula Vee.
