He has written many books, including <em>Progressive Muslims: On Justice, Gender, and Pluralism</em>; <em>Cambridge Companion to American Islam</em>; <em>Politics of Knowledge in Premodern Islam</em>; and <em>Memories of Muhammad</em>.
