Librivox: Outline of Science, Vol. 1, The (Solo) by Thomson, J. Arthur

Librivox: Outline of Science, Vol. 1, The (Solo) by Thomson, J. Arthur

In The Outline of Science, Thomson gives us a window into scientific thinking as it stood in 1922 on the big, the little, and the biological. With straightforward language intended for a general audience, this book covers astronomy from the Solar System to the Milky Way, the submicroscopic makeup of matter from protons and electrons, and the evolution of simple living beings into the varied fauna of the world today. Thomson cites many examples that would have been familiar to his readers of the day and notes where scientific understanding leaves off and conjecture begins. He clearly shows how the accumulation of observation and experiment stacked up to form the body of knowledge reported in the book. For even the scientifically well-versed, there will be interesting nuggets, for investigation into how the world came to be as it was, was both wide and deep. To a modern listener, what was not known may be as interesting as what was. With the 100-inch Mt. Wilson reflector the largest telescope in the world, the existence of galaxies outside the Milky Way was suspected but not confirmed. Neutrons, soon to become important in the field of nuclear energy and atomic bombs, were as yet unguessed-at, yet the prospect of liberating the immense energy of the atom was already a keen interest. Although the famous Michaelson-Morley experiment had already been seen as disproof of an all-pervading "ether" which facilitated the flow of energy across empty space, scientists still retained ether as a place-holder for properties they could measure but not explain - an approach very similar to the "dark matter" of modern cosmology. Regardless of your personal sentiments on Darwin's theory of evolution, Thomson provides well-chosen examples that illustrate why this theory arose. He examines not only the fossil record but the evidences present in modern living beings that the process of evolution is by no means finished, but ongoing. Even at that time, Thomson worried over the future of energy sources. He contemplated the exhaustion of the coal fields and indeed, the eventual exhaustion of all usable energy in the universe, foreshadowing our concept of entropy. This book has been consistently among the "Top 100 E-Books" published by Project Gutenberg. Summary by Mark F. Smith.

The Furnace

The Furnace

Why The Furnace? Quite simply because most people in Australia, and the world, can no longer get to Mass, or even into a church. The point of these podcasts is to bring people a share of the Mass in the Word of God and prayer. But why the name? Because the Heart of Jesus is a “Furnace of love”. This is how St Gertrude the Great describes it. As she prays: O Sacred Heart of Jesus, fountain of eternal life, Your Heart is a glowing furnace of Love. You are my refuge and my sanctuary. O my adorable and loving Saviour, consume my heart with the burning fire with which Yours is aflamed. Pour down on my soul those graces which flow from Your love. Let my heart be united with Yours. Let my will be conformed to Yours in all things. May Your Will be the rule of all my desires and actions. Amen The point of these homilies is first of all to share this with everyone - to share the love of God’s heart with every human heart. There is nothing original about that. This is, basically, all priests are ever trying to do. And it’s the only real point of the Catholic Church: invented by Christ to share Christ, starting from his pierced heart on the cross on Good Friday. It’s only fitting that at this time each of us are being refitted with slightly larger crosses that our creator comes to meet us from the cross with his own heart pierced and broken. There is so much I could say about the Heart of Jesus - but I would have to go on forever, because his Heart is infinite. So I’ll finish with the invitation of another of the great saints of the Sacred Heart, St Claude la Colombiere: May the Heart of Jesus Christ be our school! Let us make our abode there . . . Let us study its movements and attempt to conform ours to them. My friends, lets enter Jesus’ heart together. It’s not just me recording it, or just you listening to a recording. I rely on your prayers, and as I write and talk I am praying for each of you. And in any case, there is no such thing as a Christian doing something by themselves: like the Trinity, where one is, the others are. So let’s enter together, for Jesus is standing in front of us now, with his heart wide open, to enter and experience his love, his healing, his teaching, authentic freedom - and eternal life with him.

Real It In - 10 Podcasts from the week, in under an hour. - The MetaPodcast -

Here on real it in, I take close a look at the week in the podcasting world, meta-analyze it, pull out the juiciest nuggets of data from the week, and recap the distilled information. Real it in is a weekly podcast which provides a 3-5 minute recap, of ten different podcasts in each episode. These podcasts are chosen very specifically and intentionally, from an ever-changing list of over 30 podcasts. These 30 podcasts are ones which provide relevant information, to help with one's personal journey of growth, learning, and expansion. Most of them are also some of the most popular podcasts today. The episodes chosen each week, will be ones which help us to empower ourselves, and become better people. The goal of this show, is to be a part of the collective evolution that this age of the internet has fostered us into. There is so much awesome content, and so many amazing conversations, just passing us by very day. It can be frustrating that we have no way to sort through all of this data, and no way to prioritize which shows to check out. As a result of this growing issue, I decided to make it my JOB to sort through over 30 podcasts a week. Now I do it, so you don't have to! These podcasts aren't just good. They are great. All of them! They are making history. I created this show, to help share these messages, and inspire others to listen to these podcasts too. This show is not designed to take the place of these shows, for that would be impossible. A distinct change is taking place. Now that we have access to the internet, we are collectively meta-analyzing all of the information. It is now time for us all, to do a meta-analysis of ourselves. Of what we are, where we are, and where we are going. As we enter, what I call "The Meta Age." This is the age of podcasts. A time when anyone can broadcast what they know, to the world. Now we all can take in infinite data, spanning across all of recorded human history, and create our own, personally decided upon, "meta-mind set." This show is a distillation of the amazing work that these podcasters do for us, and should hopefully be a powerful part of your Meta-Mind Set. This is, the world's first MetaPodcast. Welcome, to Real it in!

The ParentNormal Podcast: A Parenting and Family Podcast by Imperfect Parents for Imperfect Parents

The ParentNormal Podcast: A Parenting and Family Podcast by Imperfect Parents for Imperfect Parents

The ParentNormal Podcast is a show by imperfect parents for imperfect parents, which are all parents. The show features interviews with celebrity parents, everyday parents and parenting “experts” who have to admit they aren’t perfect either.

The goal of the show is to help parents laugh when they want to cry, because parenthood is too stressful to endure without being able to laugh at how absurd it can get. Parenting humor and parenting fails are highlights of the show, but stories of real parenthood, lessons learned from parenthood and advice on how to be a better parent are the foundation of the show.

The ParentNormal Podcast is hosted by Chris Cate, who has been on HuffPost Parents’ weekly list of funniest parents on Twitter more than 100 times. His parenting humor has also been featured on BuzzFeed, Reader's Digest, HuffPost, Scary Mommy, TODAY Parents, CafeMom, Disney's Babble and many other parenting sites. He is also the author of The ParentNormal Crash Course and Perfect Parenting: A Complete History.

Previous guests on The ParentNormal Podcast have included well-known parents such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid author Jeff Kinney, Baby Einstein creator Julie Clark, HuffPost co-founder Arianna Huffington, Super Troopers director Jay Chandrasakhar, comedians Nate Bargatze and Nick Thune, children’s singer/songwriter Laurie Berkner, The ONE Thing co-author Jay Papasan, original Wiggles member Greg Page, The Longest Shortest Time podcast host Hillary Frank, Pinkalicious author Victoria Kann, singer/songwriter Lisa Loeb and many others.

The ParentNormal Podcast is made for parents who have changed too many diapers and outfits; washed too many dishes and clothes; sacrificed too much sleep and food; watched too much Nick Jr., Disney Junior, Sesame Street, Thomas and Friends, Peppa Pig, Paw Patrol, Mickey Mouse, and Sofia the First; and endured one too many meltdowns.

Listen to this show when you need more than wine to get through washing dishes, folding clothes, mowing the lawn, cleaning up millions of goldfish crumbs or sitting in the doorway of your kids’ rooms at night to make sure the monsters don’t come out.

In short, if Comedy Bang Bang is for hipsters, Nerdist is for nerds, This American Life is for intellectuals, Planet Money is for entrepreneurs, Freakonomics is for freaks, Harry Potter is for Hermione (if JK Rowling is honest), ESPN is for sports fans, WTF is for Obama, NPR is for National Public Radio and Serial is for everybody’s breakfast, The ParentNormal Podcast is the perfect show for imperfect parents.

The Sunday Morning Hangover

The Sunday Morning Hangover

TEN REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD VOTE FOR“THE SUNDAY MORNING HANGOVER” AS THE BEST RADIO SHOW ON EUGENE WEEKLY’S BEST OF EUGENE BALLOT 2005 1) This week the Eugene Weekly has on the back cover the official ballot for the best of Eugene readers poll. And every year some lameass radio show like the STORM AND DENNIS show, 94.5 FM wins best radio show. Rather than having some corporate happy talk loser show that plays wimpy top 40 soft rock win again this year, strike a blow for free form radio that doesn’t suck and vote for “The Hangover”. 2) My show “The Sunday Morning Hangover” has been entertaining Eugene for almost three years playing obscure and forgotten popular music from the early 1900’s up to present day sounds. 3) In the space of Two hours on Sunday mornings on KWVA 88.1 FM I have covered musical genres such as Exotica, Lounge, International, Found Music, Stupid Songs, Bizarre Children’s Music, Jazz, Rock, Country, Folk, Classical, Nostalgia, and Comedy while trying to maintain a palatable mix entertaining enough to listen to even with a Hangover. 4) Past shows have featured Rare and Unreleased tracks not commercially available and unheard on other radio shows. 5) I have produced and obtained Biographic Specials about artists such as Martin Denny, Ray Charles, The Bonzo Dog Band, Brian Eno, Peggy Lee, Henry Mancini, William Shatner, The Kinks, The Beach Boys, and Pink Floyd. 6) Special segments include musical explorations of Bossa Nova, Stolen Melodies, Whistling Recordings, Song Poems, Doo Wop, Vintage 78’s and Bird Records. 7) The Hangover is not just about music. Talk and Discussion segments have included info on the Arts, Hangover Cures, Entertainment News, Obits, Tributes, Horoscopes, Political Comment, Weird News, and Pet Parades. 8) Topical Specials have entertained and informed you about Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, Christmas, Easter, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Labor Day. 9) All of this is accomplished free of charge on a strictly volunteer basis with benefits to me other than sharing my love for music and thoughts about life, with NO COMMERCIALS. 10) The Tenth reason to vote The Sunday Morning Hangover Best Eugene Radio Show is to feed and stroke my massive ego, and everyone knows all radio DJ’s are egomaniacal assholes who need constant attention.

On The Road with Mac and Molly - Pets & Animals on Pet Life Radio (PetLifeRadio.com)

Thirty years ago – in the second year of our marriage -- my husband Gene and I (with our toddler Brooke in tow) took – what turned out to be – a glorious two month motor trip across Canada and Alaska – starting in Quebec and winding up in British Columbia. I still smile as I think of Gene shaving in our motor home’s rear view mirror on a cool morning by a pristine lake in Yukon Territory. I still cherish the extraordinary kindness of a farmer in Saskatchewan who rescued us from a ditch when our vehicle slid down an embankment. I still fill up with awe as I recall the staggering beauty of the Canadian Rockies. I still feel the excitement of the chuck wagon races at the Calgary Stampede, still ooh at the kick of the kitsch in Dawson’s Creek, still savor the aroma of Montreal’s culinary delights, still cherish my familial connections to Nova Scotia, still marvel at the enduring culture and artistry of the Tlingit, still delight in the metropolitan flair of Ottawa, Canada’s capitol city. Two years prior to this journey, Gene and I made our way -- in a Chevy Blazer -- across the United States stopping to applaud the precise timing of Old Faithful at Yellowstone, to laugh at the delightful antics of the black-tailed prairie dogs near Devil’s Tower in Wyoming, to estimate the miles to the next grain silo on the Great Plains, to marvel at all the wares (a jackalope?) on offer at Wall Drug . . . another wonderful adventure! Now we’ve auctioned our home and most the contents and are making the final preparations to hit the road again but -- this time – in a truck with a 38-foot fifth wheel trailer and with Mac and Molly, our sibling pair of four-year-old Old English Sheepdogs, along for the ride. With no specific itinerary, we'll travel about the United States and Canada reporting from the well-traveled thoroughfares and lightly-traveled lanes on the joys and challenges of sharing the open road with two-hundred-plus-pounds of dog. We’ll give you a heads up on what's dog-friendly along the way and we'll seek out the usual and the unusual, the celebrated and the hidden. We’ll report on fascinating places and events, intriguing trends, creative artists, unusual hobbyists, hard workers, odd jobbers, cutting-edge technology and old-time pleasures. Listeners may expect the light-hearted and the serious, entertainment, information, insights, passion, a fresh eye . . . all depending on the subject matter for each particular show. So come along as we head off . . . On the Road with Mac and Molly!

Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot

Flores Girl: The Children God Forgot

There is something in the jungle of Irma Flores that has terrorized Sarah for years. As a scientist she needs to know what it is and by confronting this evil she is about to be awakened from her nightmare. She doesn’t know it but she will also begin her first faltering steps toward enlightenment. Along the way, she will have to contend with a strange dwarf people, pirates, corporate raiders and an obstinate lover. Her road to nirvana will be a raw and bruising journey that is certain to be both entertaining and moving for the listener. The media eagerly made the startling announcement about the unique hobbit fossil find and the existence of hobbit human relatives on Flores Island 16,000 years ago, prehistoric survivors that seemingly went extinct just a few short years ago. Only, the scientists were dead wrong! They are still alive today and two American scientists are going to discover them and unwittingly they will introduce this tribe of small, archaic people to the ultimate modern predator: humanity. These three-foot tall bipeds are not the Hobbits of the JRR Tolkien's stories, but a small tribe of dwarf prehistoric people, Homo Floresiensis, living in seeming isolation for nearly a half million years on the Indonesian tropical island of Irma Flores. In their unrelenting quest for knowledge, Sarah and Richard inadvertently expose these innocents to the onslaught of the modern world including corporate raiders, Indonesian pirates and ardent religious zealots. In the process of discovery and befriending these ancient people, Sarah and Richard must survive a serious clash of divergent personalities while rediscovering their own humanity and need for love. This is their adventure, combining a clash of cultures, religious ardor with the oldest stories of all: the meaning of friendship and true love. This as a rousing, humorous adventure novel with serious undertones about our very definition of humanity, and how we treat the other sentient creatures that share our small planet. Many elements within the novel have a strong connection with the topical issues of today ranging from Creationism, the environment, stem cell research and finally to the voracious appetite of our ever expanding consumer economy. Moreover, the so-called Hobbit people described within the novel, locally known by Flores natives as the Ebu Gogo, are being searched for by scientists in Indonesia as we speak. This story is so gripping that both "Sixty Minutes" on CBS and National Geographic ran numerous specials on the controversial Flores Island fossil find. The Children God Forgot is the first novel in the Flores Girl Trilogy and the second novel is nearing completion! Warning: this adventure novel contains adult themes, numerous naked hobbits, some sexuality, adult language, a dose of graphic violence and a complete disdain for most authority figures.
