Summary: <p>At 14 million outpatient visits each year pharyngitis (sore throat) is a common complaint in any emergency department. This is an arena, however, where professional society guidelines and conventional teaching do not do justice to the existing data. We scoured the world’s literature for high quality data, and offer a comprehensive review of potential benefits and harms of antibiotic and symptom therapy for streptococcal pharyngitis.</p>
