The Community Fridge Movement: Selma & Sara of the Friendly Fridge

Having A Night show

Summary: Hunger has no name, religion, creed, or color, yet it is all around us, both seen and unseen. This week we talk to Selma Raven and Sara Allen, the women behind one of the Community Fridges that have begun cropping up around New York City. Community Fridges are a mutual aid movement built out of the startlingly simple idea that everyone should have access to fresh fruits and vegetables, and that food should NEVER be going to waste when there are hungry people. It is food justice incarnate. We were elated to get to speak with Selma and Sara, and to be spreading awareness about this -- a movement that is not built on the idea of "charity", which carries with it an inherent us-vs-them mentality, but rather on the idea that we all go through trying times and therefore need to care for one another.
