He attended Western Michigan University where he received a BA in English and Spanish. He then worked with the mentally ill in rehabilitation centers for several years before returning to school to obtain a medical degree from Wayne State University School of Medicine and later did his residency in psychiatry at the University of Kansas Medical Center, followed by a fellowship in Geriatric Psychiatry from NW University.
