Summary: Two martyrs were made in Delhi on October 31, 1984: Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who was shot to death by her bodyguard Beant Singh; and Singh, who was shot to death by other members of the Prime Minister's security force. Both sides of the conflict between the Indian government and the Sikh religion were rallied to action, but there was much more bloodshed to come before they could find peace.
