Ep 350: James Nash Shares his Recent Experience in the National Spotlight

The Rich Outdoors show

Summary: Today I am joined by my good buddies James Nash and Jim O’Leary to catch up on all the events circling James and realistically the hunting community. James is a Hunting Guide, Rancher, and all-around thoughtful guy that is very well spoken and in my opinion a great thought leader for our community. James’ recent nomination to an ODFW Committee put him in the heated spotlight of some very opinionated and negative groups. In this podcast, we talk about what went down from his perspective, as well as what we can learn from this incident. We also cover why “conservation” is becoming a tired word overused by both sides and how we could alternatively think about our role. On a lighter note, we also talk about what James has been seeing in regards to his extensive time studying elk habitat improvement and what his projections are for the upcoming season.

Show Notes:

Introduction – 0:04:01

Overview of James Debacle – 0:06:44

Board Overview – 0:12:31

Oppositions – 0:16:03

Facing the Backlash – 0:25:16

Why Ant-Hunters Protect Predators More Than Prey – 0:35:06

How to Find the Good & Move Forward – 0:43:36

Conservation & It’s Future – 0:55:48

A Look Into the Reality of Ranching – 1:01:42

The Bright Side, Kokanee Fishing, and Jim – 1:13:30

Elk Management & 2019 Season – 1:19:26

Closing Thoughts – 1:24:26

Today’s podcast is brought to you by Solo Targets. I pumped about the new solo targets too because I use the crap out of them. We all know that you should train like you fight or practice as close to the real thing as you can. Solo Targets are an archery target allow you to practice on a truly life-size, hyper-realistic target. Here is why I like Solo Targets, besides the fact that I get to shoot at giant bulls every day. The Solo Target is a hyper-realistic skin that can be used in conjunction with pretty much any block or target you already have. The solo skin also forces you into a much more real-life scenario where you have to pick a spot on the animal and not a circle on a target. Solo Targets has launched a bunch of new targets this year and you can pick whatever species you want from elk, sheep, ibex, deer, you name it. This time of year I spend hours upon hours scouting with my On X maps. With tag draws in full swing it is 100% about getting a good tag and a big piece of getting a good tag is figuring out if you can find a hidden gem. Finding that spot where you can get away from people. That’s why I spend hours combing through the maps. My favorite feature this time of year besides the public-private mapping is the ability to switch form topo to satellite view, or even hybrid. I find certain features are more noticeable when I switch back and forth. I have also set about 10,000 waypoints on my maps marking everything that even remotely looks interesting. The cool part about that is that when I scout with my desktop all of those spots are automatically on my iPhone so when I go to the field I can save my maps and have all of that info.
