PERMIE KIDs Podcast 338 – Embracing Change in the Light of Winter (Solstice and Season)

PERMIE KIDs Podcast show

Summary: Winter solstice and indeed the entire season provides a unique opportunity to begin to learn and live in deeper connection with Earth and the light of winter. Many people believe that Earth is farthest way and hence colder in winter. Even though this makes logical sense, it is incorrect. This cognitive disconnect (problem) can be the solution to igniting wonderment about Earth.
In astronomy, the solstice is either of the two times a year when the Sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. The celestial equator is on the same plane as the earth’s equator. In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs in December when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn. Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. (Note: The winter and summer solstices are reversed for those living in the southern hemisphere.)
Observances, celebrations and rituals surrounding the winter solstice have had a unique history. For our distant ancestors, dependent on hunting, gathering, and growing, the seasons and the weather played a central role in their lives. Regardless of our heritage, culture or place, we too can deepen our understanding and connection to ourselves, Earth and all our relations during the solstice and winter season. In today’s podcast you’ll learn about five ideas to get you and your children started embracing change in the light of winter solstice and the season.
This Show We Explore:

* Plastic, a new song from Formidable Vegetable Sound System’s newest children’s music CD
* Beginnings Matter: “Winter allows us to wrap up in the comforting scarf of healing, but we must slow down to allow its magic.” – Terri Guillemets
* Gratitude for Support: Institute of Permaculture Education for Children (IPEC) and our PERMIE KIDs members
* Beauties in Your Path: 9 resources to be the “light” this season and 50% discount on IPEC 2-day Intro to Permaculture Course
* What’s the Story: Emergent learning opportunities during the time of seasonal change and the light of winter
* 5 learning ideas to celebrate this time of year with our children

Become a Member

We invite you to become a member of our Community Supported Education network, paying it forward to support the work of families, educators, artisans and designers helping nourish life for the future of all our children and planet.

Through solstice, we are offering 30% discount PLUS:

Buy One Get One annual membership

Become a member yourself and we’ll send a free membership of equal value to a friend or family member of your choice.
