PERMIE KIDs Podcast

Summary: PERMIE KIDs is a community revolutionizing what it means to educate and be educated. We don't teach; we empower. We inspire and, with PERMIE KIDs, inspiration grows. Everyone who is in the lives of children - parents, grandparents, teachers, coaches, neighbors, mentors, and more - is an educator. You are an educator, whether or not you realize or want such an important responsibility. Together, we can take back our individual rights and empower our children and our children's children with the ethics, principles, knowledge, and characteristics needed to not just survive, but to thrive with a sense of freedom and hope. To do this, it is incumbent upon us to stand together as a community. We need to take responsibility together and empower one another to educate. And, in turn, empower children to take a solutions-based, active approach to life by learning to responsibly care for themselves, others, and the world. Let's take responsibility together. Let's empower each other, our children, and our children's children. Let's educate!

PERMIE KIDs Podcast 340 – Learning Landscapes: Maps and Paths | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:42

In today’s PERMIE KIDs Podcast we discuss how children are naturally drawn to explore and understand Nature in their place and time. The reading of, playing with and making of maps and paths helps children develop a connection with and love for Earth. It is only for those things that we feel connected to, have a love for, that we then feel grief when it is not cared for. Through active, playful love children are naturally drawn to know more about and take actions to care for Earth. Maps tell a story, be it a story of the terrain, location of natural resources, geopolitical boundaries, human movement, changes over time or any of the multitude of purposes for maps that can be integrated into our children’s learning environment. Having maps of all sorts easily accessible to children to not just look at but play with, along with intriguing fictional and factual stories in maps help characters navigate their journey, can inspire interest in not only the use and history of maps but also exploration and creation of new maps of their local place and time.  PERMIE KIDs Podcast 338 – Embracing Change in the Light of Winter (Solstice and Season) | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 29:09

Winter solstice and indeed the entire season provides a unique opportunity to begin to learn and live in deeper connection with Earth and the light of winter. Many people believe that Earth is farthest way and hence colder in winter. Even though this makes logical sense, it is incorrect. This cognitive disconnect (problem) can be the solution to igniting wonderment about Earth. In astronomy, the solstice is either of the two times a year when the Sun is at its greatest distance from the celestial equator. The celestial equator is on the same plane as the earth’s equator. In the northern hemisphere, the winter solstice occurs in December when the sun shines directly over the tropic of Capricorn. Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter. (Note: The winter and summer solstices are reversed for those living in the southern hemisphere.) Observances, celebrations and rituals surrounding the winter solstice have had a unique history. For our distant ancestors, dependent on hunting, gathering, and growing, the seasons and the weather played a central role in their lives. Regardless of our heritage, culture or place, we too can deepen our understanding and connection to ourselves, Earth and all our relations during the solstice and winter season. In today’s podcast you’ll learn about five ideas to get you and your children started embracing change in the light of winter solstice and the season.  PERMIE KIDs Podcast 337 – Thanksgiving is Over, Now What | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 23:56

Thanksgiving is over, now what? An attitude of gratitude nourishes life. The time for this has not passed, but it before us. Opportunities to embrace this are all around if we open our minds, hands and hearts. Permaculture, infused into not only the learning landscape but our holistic life landscape, calls us to self-regulate to make ethical choices, take action, and live knowing “all is in relation.” To paraphrase Dr. David Blumenkrantz, we are a collection of works of human experience. In this way, we are a library of life connected to the wisdom of our ancestors and a thread into the future.  Podcast 330 – Initiation into Being Nature: Animal Allies | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 40:24

Education is indeed our greatest resource, but it is not facts and figures that hold the power of change, regeneration and even transformation for humans and Earth. What might be possible if “becoming nature” through the mind, body and spirit of our animal allies were held as a central design component in our children’s education from the earliest years on? Stories heard and experienced through the heart hold the richest transformative educational power. In today’s Permie Kids Podcast we explore the design principle of “Animal Allies,” creatively termed by David Sobel in his book Childhood and Nature: Design Principles for Educators. This is a tool that we can use to help children go beyond the “me” and “it” mindset of nature and instead enter into an “I” and “thou” relationship with Nature.
