#401 with Kayla Greet

Summary: It was early September and I had a few hours to kill, so I was walking to my Air Bnb in Manchester. From where I left my second of two U.K. buddies (one back to London, the other Blackpool), the trek was several miles and would take close to two hours. With an original pressing of Subhumans Time Flies… …But Aeroplanes Crash that I had rescued from a second hand shop in Ireland in tow and twenty pounds of my life weighing on my back, I set off to wander the roots of Buzzcocks and Joy Division. As a huge Smiths fan, Salford Lads Club was an obvious stop. I figured I would pop into interesting places along the way. Then the rain came down in droves. A lorry rushing by covered me in brown sludge from the street. I considered leaving the Subhumans behind just so I could put both hands in my pockets as I walked. My fingers pruned like I'd been sitting in a bath too long and the precipitation came at me sideways like a pissed-off acquaintance. As I rounded a corner in a residential neighborhood, I came across some abandoned graffiti. Just two more strokes of the paint can would have cemented the word “FUCK.” I literally saw the writing on the wall. These songs are the antithesis of that experience. They're what I turn to when the storm of depression starts brewing in my head. We do our very best to get through life in a way that adds “smile lines” instead of “wrinkles” to the folds in our faces as we age. In March of this year I made a pilgrimage to Razorcake HQ and put on a lot more “smile lines.” I put faces to names that, before this, only left newsprint smudges on my fingers. And they actualized what I'd suspected all along: these are some of the best people I could ask for as friends. Thank you to Todd and the entire Razorcake familia for the good times.
