 #414 with John Di Marco | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 60:19

I tried to get hyped up and kick up some dust! Ended up crying in my beer. Of course from the sadness and pain, but also the beauty of life and love that cuts right through it. Here are some songs that really move me (to tears, apparently). It's a laugh-cry. It ebbs and flows. Is this what forty is really like? “Clean your teeth and get to bed on time Can't recall why I've been so afraid Of the dim and quiet life Head in the clouds and both feet in my grave” “Blank Slate,” The Arrivals Hey, sorry to get all Wavy Gravy on you, but these are some grownup feelings I am still figuring out. Thank the ‘Cake that I can touch on it here with y'all. I forgot to announce the Duncan Redmonds song—and I can't figure out who is singing on this track. I have the CD and it states Dickie Hammond on guitar, I assume Duncan on drums. If anyone can shed some light, please contact us here. I'll be honest; this one wasn't so cracking for me at first, but really touches me now. RIP Justin Bokma, one of my first local skate heroes, and John Stabb, truly one in a billion. Enjoy the tunes. -John Di Marco To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #413 with Bianca and Rhea of LA Zine Fest | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 81:03

Bianca and Rhea from L.A. Zine Fest join Todd Taylor to discuss some of the things keeping our body temperatures down this season: local label CoolWorld Records, ice cubes shaped like “any damn thing you can think of,” sipping drinks out of high heeled shoes, and Bianca's curious affection for a store called Home Goods. All that banter plus the real treats—music—including new local releases from Alice Bag's first solo album and Jeffzilla's sixty-five song cassette. –Rhea To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #412 with Kurt Morris | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 47:39

For my 50th (!) podcast for Razorcake I asked for some help from my Facebook friends. I told them to tell me a favorite song or two, or something they had been listening to a lot lately. A number of them came through, including a fair number of Razorcake contributors.Below I've included a sentence or two about the person who recommended each song. Thanks for your help, all! I couldn't have done it without you. Mara'akate – Brian suggested I play one of his bands. He played guitar in Mara'akate back when we were in college. He went to a neighboring university and I spent a lot of time hanging out with them. We also did an online zine called actionattackhelicopter. Dead Trend – Like Brian, Michael suggested I play his band. Mike writes for Razorcake. The one time we hung out it just so happened that we saw Kurt Ballou from Converge. Russian Circles – This one's from Joe. He and I went to college together and lived on the same floor in the dorm for a couple years. Mastodon – This is another track from Joe. It's not that I like him more than the other people; I just really like his two choices for songs. Wild Animals – Rich chose this one. He's a reviewer for Razorcake and lives in England. I dig the fact that he's fifty and still really into punk rock. Dark Thoughts – Liz, also a Razorcakecontributor, chose this song. Liz is the only Razorcake contributor I know of who lives in the Boston area (where I reside). We hang out from time to time and she always makes me laugh. The Plimsouls – Jimmy chose this oldie, but goodie. Jimmy is the workhorse of Razorcake. I see more reviews by him in an issue than anyone else. He's also a fount of knowledge about East LA punk. Parquet Courts – My girlfriend's co-worker, Jess, chose this tune. We went to a house show last fall where I was by far the oldest person there. It was pretty great. A Giant Dog – We all have that person who got us into punk; for me that was Jeremiah. He's a walking musical encyclopedia and is always up on great new music. Defiance, Ohio – When I specifically asked Jane for a suggestion she said, “You probably won't like this, but what about this song by Defiance, Ohio?” Whatever. I totally dig this track. Chamberlain – Tricia is one of my oldest friends. I've known her for over twenty years. She was a regular customer in the record store I worked at in high school in our hometown. Fresh Snow & Julie Fader – Simon works with Razorcake and co-founded the LA Zine Fest. I always like her Razorcake podcasts because they make me laugh and she has a very pleasant speaking voice. -Kurt To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  #411 with Craven Rock and his buddy Kieran | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 58:26

“Everything has been done, so stop making art.” This is something haters have been saying as long as people have been expressing themselves. Just like people have always been talking about it being the end of the world, people have been talking about how everything has already been done and how all the stories have been told. However, if you believe in science, the idea of the end of the world has never been more real. If you are constantly inundated with information, than it probably seems truer than ever that everything has been done. Ever the cynic, I often espouse similar rhetoric. I'll be the first to mention something has been done a thousand times or to call a band a weak imitation of its influences—particularly when it comes to punk or rock'n'roll. Well-trod territory, indeed. But I'm not a hater because I am truly obsessed with music; always looking for something I haven't heard that truly excites me. It's chasing the dragon to want music to be as fresh and exciting as it was when I was a teenager. But I can't imagine not seeking out new music. That's like not reading books anymore—which is something else people give up on. I haven't given up. Sometimes, all I'm doing that's not giving up is seeking out new music. I'm pickier. I dig deeper. I look harder. And, yes, I'm cynical. But life without getting into music that is new to me would be a dark and cutting insult. I got to thinking about this when I looked at this set and realized there's not a single artist on it I've been a fan of for more than a year or two. That wasn't even intentional. Keep making art. Stay engaged. Don't give up. -Craven Rock To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Interview with The Bombpops | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 89:26

LISTEN HERE: Bombpops Interview MP3 How many Bombpops does it take to get a sugar high on '90s skate-influenced pop punk? I'd say about four straight out of Southern California in the form of two shredding lady guitarists and two dudes in a long-familiar rhythm section. The Bombpops are back to a touring schedule as frenetic as their pop punk sound and party-on-stage performances following personal breaks, personnel changes, and multiple hospital visits. They may not be clean, and they probably aren't rolling street-legal, but they are deep in the throat of your mom. I promise this will be my last podcast dedicated to grammar. Whereas the last one looked at multiple periods (ellipses), in this one I'm using the solitary period as the theme.  Interview with Western Settings | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 59:50

Listen Here: Western Settings Interview MP3 Western Settings is a (punkish) (pop) punk band from San Diego, Calif. It is the kind of band that keeps getting better, that you'll catch yourself listening to or singing along with again and again. The instrumentals are energized and melodic, with influences running the gamut, and the uniquely listenable, gruff vocals deliver often sentimentallyrics. When I moved from Denver to Los Angeles, Western Settings' Yes It Is—which I was already frequently listening to and in love with—was the first record I bought on wax. Their next EP Old Pain was even better. The tagline of La Escalera Records, guitarist Will's label and home to their EP, is: “Without each other we have nothing!” At its core, the deep connection people have to this band is clear to me: we have each other. This is due in part to their lyrics, and in part to them; if you have met these guys even once, there's a good chance they already feel like friends. If you haven't met them, their records can still make you feel that way. Western Settings is four guys who eat burritos and make good songs—and are the biggest sweethearts you'll ever meet besides Suge Knight.  #401 with Kayla Greet | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 67:22

It was early September and I had a few hours to kill, so I was walking to my Air Bnb in Manchester. From where I left my second of two U.K. buddies (one back to London, the other Blackpool), the trek was several miles and would take close to two hours. With an original pressing of Subhumans Time Flies… …But Aeroplanes Crash that I had rescued from a second hand shop in Ireland in tow and twenty pounds of my life weighing on my back, I set off to wander the roots of Buzzcocks and Joy Division. As a huge Smiths fan, Salford Lads Club was an obvious stop. I figured I would pop into interesting places along the way. Then the rain came down in droves. A lorry rushing by covered me in brown sludge from the street. I considered leaving the Subhumans behind just so I could put both hands in my pockets as I walked. My fingers pruned like I'd been sitting in a bath too long and the precipitation came at me sideways like a pissed-off acquaintance. As I rounded a corner in a residential neighborhood, I came across some abandoned graffiti. Just two more strokes of the paint can would have cemented the word “FUCK.” I literally saw the writing on the wall. These songs are the antithesis of that experience. They're what I turn to when the storm of depression starts brewing in my head. We do our very best to get through life in a way that adds “smile lines” instead of “wrinkles” to the folds in our faces as we age. In March of this year I made a pilgrimage to Razorcake HQ and put on a lot more “smile lines.” I put faces to names that, before this, only left newsprint smudges on my fingers. And they actualized what I'd suspected all along: these are some of the best people I could ask for as friends. Thank you to Todd and the entire Razorcake familia for the good times. We continue to travel through time and weight, flexing our punk rock timequake, collecting all the time we waste. We worry too hard or worry not enough. I decided to do something a little bit different, in this one I talked completely in Spanish, even though I was a little bit nervous at first and did not have a clue on what to say, also I thought it was a good idea to include non-English songs in there majority in the Spanish language from bands located in Mexico, Central/South America, US, and Europe. With a little help my friends I was able to compile a small selection of very good records to include in this podcast. Thank you Daryl, Marco, Skalex, Fernando, and Gobi for helping me with this. If you don't understand the Spanish language, don't worry about it, I am pretty confident that if you dig punk rock, you'll definitely like the selection of tunes in this podcast. Remember there are no borders… FUCK BORDERS. -Mr. Cap To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."  Interview Podcast with Benny The Jet Rodriquez | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 63:49

LISTEN HERE: Benny The Jet Rodriquez Interview MP3 Summers in Los Angeles are custom built for simple, laid-back punk rock fun. It's too hot for black leather jackets. Bullet belts rust from sweat. Pants don't help. Benny The Jet Rodriquez reminds me of the ninety-nine percent of L.A. that never gets on TV. They sound like morning haze burning off and giving way to 326 days of sunshine, cracks in the sidewalks from the roots of trees, 1960s AM radio, and Mexican food in strip malls. Simple pleasures. The close friendship between Lauren and Joey is at the heart of BTJR. They play buzzy-melody, catchy punk that's in line with Thee Makeout Party and Underground Railroad To Candyland. This isn't stabbing music or kill dad music or hurt animals with firecrackers music. But it's still undeniably modern, DIY punk in both sound and action. Think: cut-off shorts. Sleeve-optional shirts. Backyard grilling. Avocados in multiple forms. A San Pedro that celebrates Mike Watt. Strong female lead. Nationwide drives in vans with episodes of California-suspicious law enforcement. Don't you worry; Benny The Jet Rodriguez leaves their unique fingerprints. There's no denying Lauren's voice and lyrics. She exudes a perennial, rosy-eyed confidence when they play, conveying it with a clear, understated strength. Joey's the anchor, the corn dog on a stick… on a stick (read to the end of the interview), the one who's willing to take the fall. They work as a team. I want to say it's sort of like Cagney and Lacey—if Cagney and Lacey smoked a ton of weed in their parents' garage, weren't cops, and one of them was a dude—but BTJR is nothing like that. They're L.A., year-round summertime punk.
