Summary: Have you ever had to work on a holiday? Of course you have; we all have. You may have even worked on Thanksgiving of this year. How did we, as a society, decide which holidays we were going to have off work and which holidays just didn’t matter enough to warrant a day off work? Dan and Lyle are in agreement, Thanksgiving and Christmas, in a perfect world, are the two holidays everyone would have off work. Sure, there are other important holidays, but these two — at least for a majority of people — signify a time for families to come together and enjoy one another. But this isn’t possible. Many of us remember a time when, on Christmas or Thanksgiving day, there were no stores open. Behind the scenes, however, a lot of people have always worked on holidays. Prison guards, police officers, truck drivers, nurses… the list of people who simply can’t just take the holidays off is large. These people are behind the scenes, though. We don’t see them, so we don’t care as much. We get in an uproar about retail shops being open on holidays because it’s in our face. All of the businesses want us to know they’re open. Of course, this makes some people mad. As a side note, don’t you think it’s ironic that the bargains that people are knocking one another over to get are called “doorbusters”?
