BoomBox combines the talents of singer/songwriter/guitarist, Zion Godchaux and producer/dj, Russ Randolph into a new style of music that is infectious and irresistible to your senses. This evolution in dance music is created by combining live instruments and vocals with multi-track sequencing, turntables, and samplers. Sounds emerge as distinct motives transcending into delicate voice and smooth grooves. Formed in late 2003, BoomBox spent most of 2004 in the studio developing both their sound and their unique approach to live performance, which combines beat-driven hypnotic grooves (heavily influenced by electronic dance music, specifically the House genre) with the musical exploration and overall song approach of the Grateful Dead. Their debut album, "Visions of BackBeat" was released in late 2005 on the Heart of Gold Records label. It contains eight tracks that are written, arranged, performed and produced by Godchaux and Randolph, with the single exception being Bob Dylan's "Who Killed Davey Moore?". BoomBox's original sound evolved from two diverse musical backgrounds. Russ Randolph, better known for his production credits (Rex Foundation, Saliva, Sugarland, Los Lobos, and Chuck Berry), crossed paths with Godchaux while he was recording and mixing the Heart of Gold Band album "At the Table." Zion Godchaux was a major creative force behind that album: singing, playing drums, guitar, and sax, and writing half of the material. The title track, "At the Table," was the first drum programming collaboration for what would later become BoomBox. When "At the Table" was released in 2004, Russ joined Zion on the Heart of Gold Band tour lineup; which included Grateful Dead vocalist Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay (Zion's mother), David MacKay, Brian Godchaux, Mark Adler, Joanie Diener and Gregg Anton. The tour, including a stop at the legendary Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco, California, was very well received. BoomBox tours the United States and has performed at such venues as the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, the Showbox in Seattle, the Fox Theater in Boulder, Oregon Country Fair, Cervantes in Denver, Jupiter in Tuscaloosa, the Variety Playhouse in Atlanta, the Electric Factory in Philadelphia, Nelson Ledges Quarry Park (Grateful Fest) in Ohio, the Neighborhood Theater in Charlotte, the Mercy Lounge in Nashville, along with many other clubs and festivals. BoomBox has shared the bill with bands such as Keller Williams, Particle, Dark Star Orchestra, Rusted Root, Brothers Past, Steve Kimmock, Airto, Carlos Jones, among others. WYSO in Yellow Springs, Ohio, featured BoomBox on their Excursions radio show. BoomBox also broke into the movies, providing the soundtracks for "Express Yourself" and "Project X" - - surfing enthusiast films featuring Kelly Slater (current and 7 time world champion) conquering waves to their invigorating sound. BoomBox's high-energy stage show remains the heart and soul of what they do, drawing people together from diverse age, social and economic backgrounds.
