Summary: Todd and Sean pull the curtain back on the prodigious interviewer, writer, and publisher Brad Listi. Brad is the founder of the literary website Nervous Breakdown and Other People, a twice-weekly podcast featuring interviews with contemporary writers. This interview is a myth-busting exercise. It serves to inform the layman on exactly how much work goes into maintaining a website and the common misconceptions of literary success. As a writer you know that the prospect of making money on a novel is so infinitesimal that sometimes you're forced to do the wrong things for the right reasons. You find yourself writing screenplays as a way of giving up or waiting for the elevator pitch and the luck of life. Or—like Brad—you put your creative energy into showcasing writers and the logistics of being one—both independent and commercial. You enter a world of unique visitor analytics, sponsorship, and watching premium content disappear into the cyber ether. Brad explains that, “If I want it to make money, if I want it to attract sponsors—which I need it to if I'm going to eat—then I have to have people on the show that people give a shit about, which is almost a joke because I'm talking to writers.” If you're talking to writers, you're inevitably talking about money in the abstract. How do you sustain creative endeavors and make a living? Listen here for all the answers. Well, at least for Brad's answers. -Matthew Hart To download the file to your computer, right click the link below and select "save target as..."
