Black Men in Prison and the Women That Love Them

Date Smarter, Not Harder! show

Summary: The United States has become the world leader in incarceration. Much has been written on the men who make up the majority of the 2 million inmates, but what about the women they leave behind? Tonight we'll be joined by Megan Comfort a sociologist at the Center for AIDS Prevention Studies at the University of California, San Francisco. Her book "Doing Time Together" details the ways that prisons shape and infiltrate the lives of women with husbands, fiancés, and boyfriends on the inside. She spent several years getting to know women visiting inmates at San Quentin. This broadcast promises to be an enlightening analysis of women caught in the shadow of America’s massive prison system as we investigate the long-term consequences on Black men, women and children of our punitive culture.
