No new show this week unfortunately, but we're replaying our first ever attempt at making a podcast together. Even in 2015, the music on this show stands up to scrutiny: from the mesmerising sounds of Starkey to the mind-melting DJ Scotch Egg project Drum Eyes, there's plenty to reacquaint yourself with this week. We'll be back with a brand new show next week.
Recorded live from the sunshine at Milhoes de Festa in Barcelos, Portugal, this week’s podcast has the usual blend of the unusual. We’ve got Saharan hip hop, Chinese field recordings, afrobeat from Berlin and lots more. New music comes from Micachu & the Shapes, Stand High Patrol, Dead Fader, and Ought; whilst we also have tracks from hiphop pioneer Madlib and 60s RnB band Vic Pitts & the Cheaters.
Fela Kuti’s key collaborator Tony Allen kicks off this week’s podcast with a track from his excellent 2009 record with Finnish multi-instrumentalist Jimi Tenor. The same number of tracks as usual, squeezed into a tight 56 minute podcast. The main cause is Anthony’s desire for punchy, danceable music this week, although that’s not the impression you’d get from the opener - the blinding, epic Mirrors Fold from the brilliant Gum Takes Tooth. Elsewhere we’ve got the new one from Pye Corner Audio, we’ve also got the latest from Polish digidub producer Dreadsquad, a haunting tribute to the wonderful Jean Ritchie and much more
