Honey on the Page | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1311

Wonder how best to pass down and preserve their Jewish identity in an increasingly secularized culture. Miriam Udel, a rabbi, mother, professor of Yiddish language and Literature at Emory University, and the winner of the 2017 National Jewish Book Award, introduces modern-day families to translated versions of the cherished fairy tales, fables, folklore, and poems originally written in Yiddish over a century ago. In HONEY ON THE PAGE: A Treasury of Yiddish Children’s Literature (NYU Press), Miriam Udel presents an unprecedented collection of nearly 50 traditional Yiddish stories and rhymes for youngsters translated into English. As Udel shares, she became interested in reclaiming this largely lost body of literature through the convergence of two pathways: her work as a Yiddish language teacher and her vocation as a mother. Combing through hundreds of anthologies and free-standing storybooks, as well as several years’ worth of periodicals, she sought authentic pieces of Yiddish prose and verse that would at once represent their times and places of origin and engage and resonate with today’s young readers. Miriam visits with Mark Alyn on this special edition of Late Night Health

What’s Next For Tackling COVID? Vaccines And Herd Immunity Explained | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 1048

The World Health Organization (WHO) tells us that herd immunity is the indirect protection from an infectious disease that happens when a population is largely immune, preferably through vaccinations but also through previous infection. You see, vaccines train our immune systems to create proteins that fight disease, known as antibodies, just as would happen when we are exposed to a disease. But – crucially – vaccines create immunity without causing illness or resulting complications. Vaccinated people are protected from getting the disease and passing on the pathogen, breaking any chains of transmission. Dr. Ben Stong visits with Mark Alyn on this edition of Late Night Health.

 Parkinson’s Awareness Month | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 776

April is Parkinson’s Awareness Month, which provides a critically important reminder that each year 60,000 people are newly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and more than one million Americans are currently living with the neurodegenerative disease. That’s why the non-profit Parkinson’s Foundation is working to make life better for people with Parkinson’s disease by improving care and advancing research toward a cure. Studies show that three out of four people with Parkinson’s do not receive medications on time when staying in the hospital, and that when this occurs two out of three will experience unnecessary complications. In response to this problem, the Parkinson’s Foundation has created the Aware in Care kit to help the 1/3 of people with Parkinson’s receive hospital care each year. The Aware in Care kit helps those affected by PD to be “aware in care”, which means they understand hospitalization risks, have the tools to play an active role in their care, are prepared for planned or unplanned hospital visits and ultimately have a plan to get the best possible care while in the hospital.
