The Build Math Minds Podcast

Summary: The Build Math Minds podcast is for my fellow Recovering Traditionalists out there. If you don’t know whether or not you are a Recovering Traditionalist, here’s how I define us. We are math educators who used to teach math the traditional way. Flip lesson by lesson in the textbook, directly teaching step-by-step how to solve math problems. But now, we are working to change that to a style of teaching math that is fun and meets our students where they are at, not just teaching what comes next in the textbook. We want to encourage our students to be thinkers, problem solvers, and lovers of mathematics..we are wanting to build our students math minds and not just create calculators. If that is you, then this podcast is for you.

 Episode 6 - Contexts for Learning Fractions | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 05:26

Welcome fellow Recovering Traditionalists to Episode 6 where we take a look at Contexts for Learning Fractions. Today we are talking about a quote from Young Mathematicians at Work: Constructing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents by Cathy Fosnot and Maarten Dolk. The Young Mathematicians at Work series developed a lot of my understanding of mathematical big ideas, but in this episode I wanted to highlight a part of the book that talks about using contextual situations as application versus construction.

 Episode 5 - Bandaids and Bandwagons | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 05:44

Welcome fellow Recovering Traditionalists to Episode 5 where we take a look at how Bandaids and Bandwagons are something you need to avoid when teaching mathematics.

Episode 4-Inspiration from Ann Elise Record | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:53

Welcome fellow Recovering Traditionalists to Episode 4. In this episode we talk with Ann Elise Record to learn about her Recovering Traditionalist journey from being a 5th grade teacher to helping other teachers build their math minds AND you’ll get her suggestion on what to do instead of timed fact fluency tests.

Welcome fellow Recovering Traditionalists to Episode 2 where we will explore the Three-Phase Lesson Format that is essential to having a student-centered math classroom. In Episode 1, I shared about Cognitively Guided Instruction. A big part of CGI is teaching through story problems. However, when you do that it’s helpful to have a way to structure your lesson and the Three-Phase format is what I recommend.

 Episode 1 - Children's Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 05:36

Welcome fellow Recovering Traditionalists to Episode 1. Today we are looking at an insight I got from one of the books that forever changed my life: Children’s Mathematics: Cognitively Guided Instruction.

Episode 0: Welcome To The Build Math Minds Podcast | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 04:00

Welcome fellow Recovering Traditionalists to Episode 0. Yes we are starting off counting with Zero, because Zero is a very important number in math but also because Zero is worth nothing and that’s what you are getting in this episode. You will get no mathematical insights just a preview of what the Build Math Minds podcast is all about.
