US Senate Republicans are due to return to the fiscal stimulus issue, as extended unemployment benefits expire in four days. The risk is that if these benefits are allowed to expire, fear of the economic consequences of unemployment will increase amongst people who have jobs. That may slow the pace at which savings accumulated during lockdown are spent.

The US labour market showed a rise in initial jobless claims (continuing claims fell). Unsurprisingly, the rise was focused on areas where there has been a rise in virus cases, and a corresponding rise in fear about the virus. Areas where fear of the virus is stable of falling have a better labour market performance.

US President Trump seems to be campaigning on law and order, and China. The president ordered a "surge" of federal agents into selected US cities, and the closure of the Chinese consulate in Houston. China tensions matter most to markets in the near term. Threats to the trade deal are unlikely before September or October (that way, the damage to the US economy would only be felt after the election).

Central banks have injected a lot of liquidity into markets (and some liquidity into the economy). This is in response to rising liquidity demand. To prevent this from becoming inflationary, central banks will need to reduce liquidity supply when liquidity demand falls. It is vital that central bank policy remains politically independent and flexible; otherwise, the outcome would be the economic illiteracy of Bitcoin (and periods of massive inflation).

In the grand tradition of the EU, a compromise deal has been agreed on the EU Recovery Fund. The heads of government meeting dragged on far, far longer than expected (except these meetings are expected to drag on longer than expected) ? but the deal was basically as expected. The precedent of joint fiscal action is established. The amounts involved are minor compared to what national governments are doing.
