I Like Your Work: Conversations with Artists, Curators & Collectors

Lanie has found successes outside of the traditional gallery sphere. In 2011, she started working with the online start-up www.20x200.com, which sells high-quality archival prints of her work. It was through this venue that a design director at Kate Spade saw her painting and asked Helena to paint an ad campaign. Jonathan Adler, the design guru, saw her work in a Saturday store and she displayed her paintings in his retail stores in Los Angeles, Miami, and online from 2015-2018.

This week I talk to the artist Angela Conant. Angela is an artist who lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Angela works fluidly across mediums, from marble sculpture to paintings and video. In this conversation we cover a lot of bases from how to manage time, working collaboratively, starting artist spaces, exploring unfamiliar mediums and curation.

In this episode, I talk to collector Myra Tucker and discuss how she became interested in art and how being around art, both in museums and in her home, has impacted her. We discuss her collection and her suggestions for how artists can connect to collectors. 

Nina is an artist who lives in Boston who creates mixed media paintings that deal with line, light and reflect her surroundings. Today I am psyched to introduce you to the artist Elizabeth Mooney. I not only love her paintings because of her paint handling but also the concept she is working with. In this episode, she talks not only about her paintings but also her kinetic sculpture and printmaking. We also talk about format/size, “How to keep it fresh”, and the shift that can occur in your work due to relocation Elizabeth Mooney lives and works in Boston, Massachusetts.

This week's episode of I Like Your Work is the first solo episode where I dive into stability as an artist. I reached out to the ILYW community and you guys told me you were interested in how to balance being an artist parent and also how to balance other things such as applications etc. I decided to share my own life and experiences in both of these avenues.  For all my non-parent artist friends, don't worry there is a TON of info that is applicable to your life. 

In this episode, I talk to the incredible painter, Anna Valdez! Anna is an artist based in Oakland, CA. Anna has had a wonderful amount of success exhibiting her work extensively. She recently was in an amazing show The Beyond: Georgia O’Keeffe and Contemporary Art at Crystal Bridges and the show has traveled and is currently at North Carolina Art Museum.

Bethanie Irons is a painter, digital artist and curator of PLEAT Gallery. Liz Wick is the owner of Astoria Coffee in Queens, NY and art collector. In this episode we discuss being a small business owner and providing space for artists and how Liz began her collection. Liz talks about how she started collecting as a broke college student who loved art and now her collection has grown to even include a Braque. I hope this episode helps artists who are intimidated by collectors and encourages others to start a collection.

This week I am talking to the wonderful and hilarious painter, Tess Billhartz. We met up in her Brooklyn studio to talk about collaboration, narrative and how film plays into her paintings. Bilhartz began collaborating on a film shortly after her move to NYC. The process of working with another artist has gone on to impact her work in the studio. We also talk about road trips, including her trip to Marfa, Texas and Bob Dylan tattoos. It's a great time and I hope you enjoy listening!

Welcome to the first episode of I Like Your Work! In this episode, we meet, Rebecca Sargent, an artist living in Dayton, Ohio. Rebecca is a painter and also the program director at a non-profit art center where she works with students to give them a creative and productive outlet. We discuss how we both fell in love with painting while in our early twenties in Italy, road tripping through the rustbelt to find and explore forgotten spaces, and how her dreams and anxieties inform her work.
