Taking down Confederate Monuments:Symbol without Substance? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:28:58

Members of Congress put themselves on a collision course with the White House on Thursday over the politics of America's Confederate legacy. The Republican-led Senate Armed Services Committee adopted an amendment that would create a commission charged with renaming Army installations that bear Confederate names and removing their Confederate symbols. A bipartisan team of House members, both veterans, proposed something similar. LIVE UPDATES: PROTESTS FOR RACIAL JUSTICE Gen. Mark Milley Says Accompanying Trump To Church Photo-Op Was A Mistake And House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., reiterated her call for members of Congress to enact legislation that would purge the Capitol of Confederate statues. The speaker told reporters she didn't believe she has the power to do so herself — effectively daring the Republicans who control the Senate to go along. "Believe me, if I had more authority we'd have fewer of those statues around," Pelosi told reporters Thursday. The speaker can move statues around within the Capitol but not take them out of it, she said. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bj-murphy9/support

Comments on home-going celebration of George Floyd | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:23:39

HOUSTON – Relatives and elected leaders spoke passionately at Tuesday's funeral for George Floyd, demanding reforms and justice for a black man whose death has shaken the world. About 500 friends, family, politicians and entertainers streamed into The Fountain of Praise church in Houston for what co-pastor Mia Wright called, "a home-going celebration of brother George Floyd's life.'' The emotional service, which rang with gospel music and calls to ensure that Floyd did not die in vain, was widely broadcast and streamed online. “I want justice for my brother, for my big brother, that's Big Floyd,” Rodney Floyd said. “Everyone is going to remember him around the world. He's going to change the world.” Those words were echoed throughout the service in remarks by several of the invited guests, a list that included Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee and Rep. Al Green. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bj-murphy9/support

America does not like Black People | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:38:28

Washington (AFP) - Protesters defied curfews across the United States as leaders scrambled to stem anger over police racism while President Donald Trump rejected criticism over his use of force to break up a peaceful rally. Standoffs between police and demonstrators stretched into the night in cities from New York to Los Angeles over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed African-American man whose killing has brought once-in-a-generation protests to the nation for the past week. But there were fewer reports of the looting and violence that had soured street demonstrations in previous nights. Tens of thousands gathered earlier Tuesday in Houston to pay a hometown tribute to Floyd, who grew up in the Texas city and is to be buried there next week. "Today is... about George Floyd's family -- we want them to know that George did not die in vain," Mayor Sylvester Turner told an estimated 60,000 people. A tearful Roxie Washington, the mother of Floyd's six-year-old daughter, told a news conference she wanted "justice for him because he was good. "No matter what anybody thinks, he was good." In New York, which on Tuesday prolonged its first curfew since World War II for the full week, AFP reporters saw hundreds refusing to go home after the 8:00 pm cutoff, instead chanting slogans and peacefully walking the streets in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Hours after the curfew, mayor Bill de Blasio said it was a "very calm situation," a day after several Manhattan luxury stores were looted. "So far, the curfew is certainly helping, based on everything I've seen in Brooklyn and Manhattan over the last three hours," he tweeted. Minnesota took one of the first concrete actions to address the grievances behind the uprising, which began after Floyd's death on May 25 in the state's largest city Minneapolis. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bj-murphy9/support

BJ Murphy www.20minuteshow.com (Podcast) An FBI investigation is underway and four officers have been fired following a fatal encounter Monday between Minneapolis police and an unarmed black man. In a statement early Tuesday, police said the man had a medical incident during an attempted arrest. However, video of the encounter shows an officer with his knee on the man’s neck for at least seven minutes. Before the man loses consciousness, he repeatedly tells officers that he can’t breathe. Leaders in Minnesota are calling for the officers involved to be held accountable. Rep. Ilhan Omar, who represents Minneapolis, called for the Department of Justice to investigate immediately. “It is sickening to watch this black man be killed while helplessly begging for help,” she said in a statement. Gov. Tim Walz and Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan also reacted to the incident, calling the video “disturbing” and demanding justice. “The lack of humanity in this disturbing video is sickening. We will get answers and seek justice,” Walz said. Four Minneapolis police officers have been fired following the death of an unarmed black man in police custody Monday night. Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo announced the 4 Minneapolis police officers were fired following their involvement in a black man's death after a cop knelt on his neck for 8 minutes --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/bj-murphy9/support

The Push to Re-open America & the Black death toll | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:36

A CDC study released Wednesday found that over 80% of the COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Georgia last month were black. It's the latest analysis showing that communities of color are being hit disproportionately hard by the coronavirus. The study comes just days after Georgia Governor Brian Kemp started reopening some of the state's businesses — a move condemned as premature and dangerous by local black leaders as well as public health officials and even President Trump. The study from the CDC, which is headquartered in Atlanta, surveyed eight hospitals in the state — seven in the Atlanta metro area and one southern Georgia. In the sample of 305 COVID-19 patients who were hospitalized in March, 247 — or 83.2% — were black. By comparison, 32 patients (10.8%) were white, 10 (3.4%) were Hispanic and eight (2.7%) were Asian or Pacific Islander. "The proportion of hospitalized patients who were black was higher than expected based on overall hospital admissions," the study says. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bj-murphy9/support
