Does God want everybody to be well? By the power of your faith can you abolish all sickness from your life and your loved ones'? In this midweek podcast episode, Jorge and John take a close look at the "Health and Wellness Gospel" and how it fails to embrace the whole council of Scripture. At its best, this idea has some basis in the Bible, but stretches the text beyond recognition. And at its worse, it sets people up for disappointment, disillusionment, and even deconversion. To be clear, God wants all of us well (eventually), but in the mean time, we live in a fallen world marked by sickness, death, and disease. Miraculous healing does happen (sometimes), but that's God's prerogative and not in our power to control. We're left to minister in this war torn landscape, through the sickness and suffering. There we find perhaps the greatest testimony to the truth of Christ is when we suffer well. In that way, Jesus' words still shine through as a ray of hope: "In this world you will have trouble, but take heart I [Jesus] have overcome the world." (John 16:33). There certainly has been something nefarious going on with the making of the movie 'Nefarious'. Sicknesses, accidents, technical difficulties, and much more disrupted the production of the new film (reminiscent of C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters) released on April 14th. Were these accidents all the result of mere coincidences? Or was true spiritual warfare at play? This week, Frank interviews Steve Deace, the writer of the novel 'A Nefarious Plot', to discuss the good, the scary, and the downright strange occurrences that took place while working on the book’s film adaptation. Is there evidence for the Exodus plagues that comes from Egypt? Shockingly, there is — at least there seems to be. In this midweek podcast episode, Frank examines the amazing parallels between the biblical Exodus and an ancient artifact known as the Ipuwer Papyrus. It’s hard to believe, but as you’ll learn, the Ipuwer Papyrus, which was authored in Egypt sometime in the second millennium BC, expresses conditions in ancient Egypt that appear to be the results of the Biblical plagues. Of course, this is controversial, especially for those who think the Exodus never actually happened. We report, YOU decide. Frank also shows that the plagues were not random — they were direct assaults on the Egyptian gods, and the hardening of Pharaoh’s heart is a slam on the Egyptian theology of the afterlife. Science is often viewed as the standard to determine all truth, which begs the question, does science even have the ability to do that? During last week’s episode, Frank walked us through the S.U.R.E. acronym, a simple way to remember four scientific arguments that prove the universe had a beginning and came into existence out of nothing. Do we need deep scientific knowledge in order to make arguments for the existence of God? Or can we demonstrate a general, objective, rational case for God's existence using common observations found in our everyday life? Philosopher and theologian Thomas Aquinas introduced the world to his "Five Ways" for the existence of God back in the 13th century, and they are still being discussed and debated today. There are some similarities between Aquinas' Five Ways and many other common arguments for the existence of God (Kalam cosmological, moral, teleological, etc.) but there are also some important distinctions to keep in mind. In this midweek podcast episode, Frank sits down with Dr. David Haines, assistant professor of theology and philosophy at Bethlehem College and Seminary, to discuss two of the five arguments Aquinas used to prove the existence of God. David is active in research related to ancient and medieval philosophy, early Reformed theology, C.S. Lewis, Thomism, natural law, and natural theology. He has given conference presentations and published a number of articles and books in these areas, including Natural Theology and Natural Law. What’s more likely? That no one created something from nothing, or that someone created something from nothing? If you ask an atheist or an agnostic this question, the answer may shock you. According to Aristotle, “nothing is what rocks dream about.” And yet nearly all scientists agree that the universe came into existence from just that, nothing. In this week’s podcast, Frank guides us through S.U.R.E., an acronym he uses to show the scientific evidence that the universe had a beginning from nothing. From that fact, we can see that cause of the universe has the attributes of God. Frank will also address questions such as: Who created God? What is the Big Bang Theory? What if science changes? “If the world is against the truth, then I am against the world.” The words of Athanasius remain relevant even in modern times, as society continues to pressure the church to abandon Christian orthodoxy. In a video that has now gone viral, Father Calvin Robinson shared this quote from Athanasius during his 12-minute long debate speech at the Oxford Union. When bishops within his own church made the decision to “bless same-sex unions”, Robinson chose to defend the sanctity of marriage in response.
