This episode was for me, the most important episode I've ever recorded to date. I got the honor of traveling to visit Neal Carter Jr., a legend in the bird dog and field trial world from the Thomasville, Ga Red Hills. He's the subject of the photo/article I found in Garden & Gun magazine about African American bird dog field trialers and dog handlers. I ripped that article out 3 years ago and taped it into my first gun dog notebook. On this episode we get down into some Black bird dog trainer history, Neal's legacy, and his English Pointers. Talk about photography that is classic, timeless, and really hits home when you think about the moments during the hunt with your special bird dog. When you talk about those types of photos, mention Derek Prestholt in the same sentence. We are shooting dog handlers have to remember the images that keep up inspired throughout the year, and I've got a few photos from Derek that really are nostalgic and keep me in the game. Derek's photos are crisp, smooth, and honestly...a bit airy. They bring me to the scents and smells of mornings filled with wet, dewy grass, a new set of training dummies, a cage full of pigeons, and...Bird Dogs. In short, Derek's photos inspire me, and they'll get to you to if you sit with them for even a second.
