Check out the full interview as Colleen 'Cosmo' Murphy and DJ Yoda dig deep into the most inventive, assured, and playful debut in hip-hop history De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising which not only proved that rappers didn’t have to talk about the streets to succeed, but also expanded the palette of sampling material with a kaleidoscope of sounds and references culled from pop, soul, disco, and even country music.
For our second and final event at EFG London Jazz Festival 2018 we were joined by Soweto Kinch to look back at the brilliant 'Abstract' by The Joe Harriott Quintet at Kings Place on Sunday 25th November 2018. “Joe Harriott was the sort of pioneer whose significance and unique contributions are only beginning to be recognised long after his passing. His ‘freeform’ concept predated free jazz, he was among the first to appreciate the role of visual art and his Indo-Jazz fusion laid an important milestone for future jazz-world music collaborations. I’m always moved by the ambition and virtuosity of someone who refused to be defined by his humble beginnings or the racism of his times, as he quipped himself, ‘I’m not your equal, I’m your superior.’ I’m really looking forward to listening to and deconstructing Abstract in more forensic detail – discovering more nuance and insights with an audience, and remembering this uncompromising innovator.” Soweto Kinch

Our final event for National Album Day saw us joined by Sonic Youth founding member Thurston Moore celebrating 30 years since the release of 'Daydream Nation' at The John Peel Archive in Stowmarket. Sonic Youth have been praised for having “redefined what rock guitar could do” using a wide variety of unorthodox guitar tunings and preparing guitars with objects like drum sticks and screwdrivers to alter the instruments’ timbre. The band is considered to be a pivotal influence on the alternative and indie rock movements. Read more at classicalbumsundays.com
To celebrate the first ever National Album Day we were joined by Dave Davies from The Kinks to look back at 50 years since the release of ‘The Kinks Are the Village Green Preservation Society’ at The John Peel Centre For Creative Arts in Stowmarket. The Kinks are the Village Green Preservation Society wasn’t initially a success upon it’s release, coming along at a time when Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Ladyland, Led Zeppelin’s debut, and the Rolling Stones’ Beggars Banquet were the flavours of the day. Although praised by many critics, it was largely overlooked by the public. However, as years passed, it’s following grew until it become viewed as a masterpiece. For many it is now justly considered Davies’ and The Kinks’ most satisfying album: a creative highpoint matched only by the band’s landmark singles of the period. Read more: classicalbumsundays.com
We were delighted ti be joined by Primal Scream the evening before the release of Primal Scream ‘Give Out But Don’t Give Up: The Original Memphis Recordings’ as part of our National Album Day celebrations to discuss their memories of the recording sessions and why the original mix has never been released until now. Teaming up with legendary producer Tom Dowd and the Muscle Shoals rhythm section of David Hood (bass) and Roger Hawkins (drums) at Ardent Studios in Memphis, the resulting recordings from those classic sessions showcase the more country soul, rock’n’roll side to a band who continue to surprise. It’s Primal Scream as you’ve never heard them before. Read more at classicalbumsundays.com

Following on from their self titled debut and a collection of instant-classic singles, Sound Of Silver felt like LCD Soundsystem's first fully realised album. It would catapult James Murphy from being a mere walking encyclopaedia to a self-conscious and emotionally developed songwriter, capable of delivering hit after hit. We were delighted to welcome Hot Chip and LCD Soundsystem’s Al Doyle to a special event in London with Gabriel Szatan discussing life inside two of the finest electronic outfits in the world. Having released six albums, with Grammy and Mercury Prize nominations to show for it and an armful of crossover hits, Hot Chip have become one of the mainstays of the festival circuit worldwide through their colourful, whimsical approach to dance-pop. Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy, fresh from looking at Sheffield and The Human League’s Travelogue album, now turns her attention across the Peaks to one of the UK’s most important musical cities; Liverpool. Focusing on The Teardrop Explodes Kilimanjaro album, we talk to Julian Cope about how he made the album, why he moved to Liverpool, and why he always traveled to the studio on an invisible horse. Colleen also looks at how Liverpool and Psych are inextricably linked, the importance of Soul Music to the area, how the nightclub Eric’s and record shop Probe inspired a scene, and Liverpool’s isolation from the rest of the country has helped create a outlook like no other. In the third of the Sounds of a City series, Colleen Murphy lifts the lid on New Order’s Power, Corruption and Lies and its relationship to Manchester. Speaking to the likes of Peter Hook, Stephen Morris and Peter Saville, we breakdown the components of an album that fused punk and dance, art and experimentation, technology and rock, to create something for a new generation of tech-savvy music-philes to get their teeth into. A Certain Ratio’s Martin Moscrop and The Charlatan’s Tim Burgess discuss this perfect blending, whilst 808 State’s Graham Massey contemplates the fact that Manchester has more in common with New York than it does with any other British city. A story that may sound familiar, but with New Order were stepping out from the shadows of Joy Division the idea of experimentation is amplified and braver, and may not have even worked. And then there was that album cover. Read more here: http://www.classicalbumexperience.com/sounds-of-a-city-new-order-power-corruption-lies/
