Get Up in the Cool show

Get Up in the Cool

Summary: Get Up in the Cool features conversations and musical collaborations with some of Old Time music's heaviest hitters, like Ken Perlman, Adam Hurt, Spencer & Rains, and Jake Blount. As an interviewer, Cameron balances an effusive curiosity for the potential of traditional music with a dogged respect for its origins. Serving as audience surrogate, Cameron asks illuminating questions to Old Time's best and brightest while telling the larger story of the tradition's modern era.

Episode 30: Don Stratton (Original Northern Flavor) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 44:09

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is fiddler Don Stratton, and he has some original old time tunes to share with a northern flavor. We recorded this in Alan Kaufman’s cabin during the Fiddlin’ Bear festival at Lake Genero in the Poconos; making it the final installment of that day’s marathon recording session.  Most of the tunes in this episode are featured in Don’s CD with former guest of the show, Alan Kaufman, so if you want to hear the studio versions, go to peapatchmusic.com and order a copy or download the album. It’s a very good CD; there’s some really inspired stuff in there, including my new tune crush, Don’s original melody titled New Harbor, which we play in this episode.  Episode 29: ‎Ludvig Drevfjäll (Old Time Infatuation) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 47:34

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is the award winning clawhammer banjoist, old time fanatic, and fiddler, Ludvig Drevfjäll. I’m really glad I had the opportunity to ask him about his story, because usually when we get together, we get straight to banjo playing and there’s not a lot of talking.  Sign up to support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Episode 28: Trip Henderson (Old Time Harmonica) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 56:55

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This episode is a great departure from the fiddling you can expect to hear on this program, because my guest is Trip Henderson and his bag of harmonicas. We talk about the harmonica’s role in old time music, which led Trip to invent my new favorite word, which is: banjoistically. Also, we talk briefly about the Old Time community’s brief love affair with Tim Kaine, which in retrospect is just bittersweet to hear.  Stillhouse Serenade https://www.facebook.com/stillhouseserenade/  Chittlin Cookers https://www.reverbnation.com/chittlincookers  Whistling Wolves https://www.facebook.com/The-Whistling-Wolves-104690952925436/  Trip's Youtube https://www.youtube.com/user/tripharmonica  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool Like and follow Get Up in the Cool on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getupinthecool/

Episode 27: David Deacon (Kentucky Fiddle Tunes) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 53:52

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is David Deacon, and he curated a nice handful of Kentucky fiddle tunes for us to play! We recorded this at the Brandywine Revival Festival last summer, hidden away up the path near a still pond with a lot of mosquitoes. You can still hear some distant jams from the other side of the holler, and a very alarming bullfrog makes an appearance.  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Episode 26: Bertram Levy (Pioneer of Melodic Clawhammer Banjo) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 45:58

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is one of the first people I met at my first ever Clifftop, melodic clawhammer banjoist Bertram Levy. We recorded this late in the week at the Keith McManus tent, so there’s a lot of background noise, but I think it makes a nice, bustling ambiance for our competing bum-diddies. And trigger warning: this episode is all banjo duets. Check out Bertram's website: http://bertramlevy.com/ Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Episode 25: Andrew Finn Magill (Live at The Random Tea Room) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 50:52

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is the virtuosic and eclectic fiddler, Andrew Finn Magill. We recorded this interview and jam in front a live audience at The Random Tea Room in Philadelphia back in November. Finn is an extremely talented musician with a seemingly bottomless well of interesting stories and experiences. So, he’s basically a dream guest for Get Up in the Cool. And I don’t want to spoil anything in the intro, so I’ll just say that we get into some non-old time shenanigans which I’m always down for.  Finn's Tour Dates and CD's for sale: http://www.andrewfinnmagill.com/ Like Andrew Finn Magill on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/andrewfinnmagill/ Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool Like Get Up in the Cool on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getupinthecool/

Episode 24: Gordon Arnold (Old Time Cello) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 55:32

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This is the last episode of 2016! As awful as this year has been, what with the fascists and the celebrity deaths, I’ve had such a great time recording this show; I think it became a real coping mechanism for me, honestly. I hope it’s been helpful for you, too. This week I’m sharing my jam and chat with Old Time cellist, Gordon Arnold. Gordon is super adventurous, which you know I love, but he’s also very rooted in the tradition.  Gordon’s contradance band: http://www.ripthecalico.com/  Rip the Calico on FB: https://www.facebook.com/RipTheCalico/  Richmond New Year’s Eve dance: https://www.meetup.com/Norfolk-Contra-Dance/events/233798144/  Buy Babes in the Woods by Snow Hill Strings: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/snowhillstrings  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: http://patreon.com/getupinthecool/  Like Get Up in the Cool on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getupinthecool/

Episode 23: Rachel Eddy (Inclusivity and Jam Etiquette) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:17:08

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s friend is Rachel Eddy! She wanted to talk about inclusivity and etiquette in Old Time sessions, which we sometimes touch on in this show, but Rachel approaches the topic with a lot more nuance and intention, and I really appreciated what she had to say!  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: http://patreon.com/getupinthecool/  Rachel’s website: http://www.racheleddymusic.com/  Ken and Brad’s new album, featuring Rachel: http://www.kenandbrad.com/store/  The Early May’s kickstarter: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1290206309/chase-the-sun-the-early-mays-new-cd?ref=project_link

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I hope you enjoy Alan Kaufman: Episode 2; the Songsmith.  Episode 21: Alan Kaufman (The Tunesmith) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 41:14

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s and next week’s friend is Alan Kaufman! Also joining us is Don Stratton on guitar, who will be featured in his own episode in the near future. Alan is a tunesmith and a songsmith; while most of us make withdrawals from the traditional music bank, Alan makes regular deposits. This week’s episode is dedicated to his original fiddle tunes and next week we’ll play and sing his original songs. Alan possesses that rare combination of whimsy and thoughtfulness necessary to make the perfect neo-traditional tune. If you play Old Time, maybe try to learn a few from this episode. I especially recommend learning “Five Bales of Hay.” Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool  Like and follow Get Up in the Cool on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/getupinthecool  Like and follow Alan Kaufman's kid's jam: https://www.facebook.com/BBUkidsjam  Buy Alan and Don's CD, All in Good Time: http://peapatchmusic.com/

Episode 20: Stephen Landis (Fiddle Hermit) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:09:09

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. How are you doing? It’s been a rough week. I know I’ve been feeling anxious, pent up. Some of you have been binge listening NPR and Facebooking yourselves to sleep; just leaning into to the discomfort. Others of you, like me, have been checking out. Deleting social media apps on your phone, engaging in lots of escapism; maybe overeating a bit. This week’s guest, Stephen Landis, is a close friend of mine, and I often look to him when I’m contemplating how to be; which is why I’m releasing his interview now, even though I only recorded it a week or so ago. Also, Stephen introduced me to Old Time, and I’m very grateful to him. Not just for teaching me my first tunes, but for sharing his reverence for the tradition.  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: http://patreon.com/getupinthecool/  Check out Stephen’s fiddling in these bands: https://sethmartinandthemenders.bandcamp.com/  https://psalters.bandcamp.com/  http://weareonthewater.com/

Episode 19: Alex Lacquement (Old Time Bass) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 41:30

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. This week’s friend is Alex Lacquement, and he’s a bassist! A Get Up in the Cool first, and hopefully not the last. Alex plays Old Time music with a lot of freedom, but he has a keen sense for exercising restraint. It’s pretty rare to find someone who excels at both leading and following; in music, but also, in general.  Episode 17: Jane Rothfield (Chasing the Old Time Muse) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 48:59

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! This week’s featured friend is very dear to me, and I’m sure to many of you as well: fiddler, banjoist, tunesmith and vessel of the Old Time muse, Jane Rothfield. Also, joining us as accompanists are Peter Oswald on cello and Alan Carr on guitar. Between Jane’s whimsical talent, Peter’s unparalleled thoughtfulness and taste, Alan’s deep and diverse musical wisdom and, I like to think, my enabling spirit, we had quite the jam. I think you’re gonna like it! Check out Jane's website: http://www.janerothfield.com/ Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Episode 18: Ron Buchanan (Square Dance Tunes) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 44:41

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool: Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends. The Old Time community is of full of internal rock stars. Some of them realize how impressive they are and they act accordingly, and I’m not trying to throw shade, I think everyone appreciates a little well-earned swagger. But for every conspicuous virtuoso, there are dozens of humble, unassuming musicians who are utter revelations on their instruments.  My guest today, Ron Buchanan, is an Old Time bodhisattva. He’s one of the warmest, gentlest souls in the community; he’ll play with anyone, anytime, and thank them for it. But nobody plays the fiddle like Ron. He’s especially good at breathing life into tired, overplayed tunes. In the latter half of the show we play Spotted Pony, Arkansas Traveler, and Soldier’s Joy, basically Free Bird, Stairway to Heaven and a third culturally relevant example. It was like playing them for the first time again. Ron loves old time music, and he plays it with a joyfulness that is thoroughly earned.  Support Get Up in the Cool on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/getupinthecool

Episode 16: Adam Hurt (Early Galax Fiddling) | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:25:59

Welcome to Get Up in the Cool, Old Time Music with Cameron DeWhitt and Friends! I’m real proud to present my jam and conversation with fiddler and melodic clawhammer banjoist extraordinaire Adam Hurt. Adam wanted to do an episode on early Galax fiddling, a subject about which he’s very knowledgeable, so I expected this to be an educational episode, and it is. What I didn’t necessarily expect was a deeply personal story about the role of Old Time in Adam’s life. I haven’t read or listened to a lot of his other interviews, so I’m not sure how typical it is for him to talk like this in front of a mic, but, suffice it to say, the stuff he says explains a lot about his playing, and, you know, how he got to be the musician we all admire so much. Also, musically, this episode is probably the sweetest one yet. I’m really happy to share it with you; you’re gonna love it.
