Episode 22: Life and Death Row: Prison Reform | Courtney Heard | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:18:34

The criminal justice system involves a broad array of interactions and processes, including: policing and arrest, bail and pre-trial detention, legal representation, plea bargains and (sometimes) jury trials, sentencing, juvenile detention, incarceration (including any rehabilitation programs, mental health treatment, and so on), re-entry support (or lack thereof), court fees and fines, and probation and parole. You can probably think of others. Almost all of these aspects of the system could be improved, and it’s a bit overwhelming to think about how inefficiencies and injustices accumulate from one step to the next. There is one theme connecting all of the problems in the criminal justice system: a lack of attention to research evidence in policy-making and practice. Too often, the research we need to guide policy simply does not exist: the relevant data either aren’t collected or aren’t shared (even across departments within a city!), or programs are implemented in a way that makes rigorous evaluation impossible (for instance, cherry-picking participants based on their likelihood of success, or implementing a program city-wide all at once instead of rolling it out more gradually). Other policy areas, such as education, are years ahead of the criminal justice system in this regard.Support The NonSequitur Show

 Episode 17: History For Atheists: Tim O’Neill | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:17:27

Tim O’Neill is the author of several bodies of work, most notably his blog HistoryforAtheists.com which is dedicated to correcting many misconceptions often used in atheist argumentation. The following is taken from the About the Author page on the above website. “I am an atheist, sceptic and rationalist who is a subscribing member of the Atheist Foundation of Australia and a former state president of the Australian Skeptics. I have contributed to many atheism and scepticism fora over the years and have a posting record as a rationalist that goes back to at least 1992. I have a Bachelors Degree with Honours in English and History and a research Masters Degree from the University of Tasmania, with a specialisation in historicist analysis of medieval literature. As a rationalist, I believe strongly that people should do all they can to put emotion, wishful thinking and ideology aside when examining any subject and that they should acquaint themselves as thoroughly as possible with the relevant scholarship and take account of any consensus of experts in any field before taking a position. Which is why I began this blog in October 2015. After over ten years of seeing supposed “rationalists”, most of them with no background in or even knowledge of history, using patent pseudo history as the basis for arguments against and attacks on religion, I felt someone needed to start correcting the popular misconceptions about history which are rife among many vocal atheist activists. I also felt there needed to be some push-back by a fellow unbeliever against several fringe theories and hopelessly outdated ideas which have no credibility among professional scholars and specialists, but which seem to be accepted almost without question by many or even most anti-theistic atheists. “History for Atheists” has grown out of these convictions. In the years since I began this blog I have won a number of fans and supporters, but also gained a few detractors and hecklers. That’s the nature of the rough and tumble of the internet. If this is your first visit here I would ask you to try to put assumptions, a priori positions, and emotional preferences to one side and look objectively at the evidence and arguments I present. If we preach objectivity and dispassionate, well-informed rational analysis to others, we need to be prepared to practice these things ourselves. And remember that it’s usually only by discovering we have been mistaken about something that we can learn something new. “Support The NonSequitur Show

Episode 14: Sargon of Akkad vs Britney Simon: Intersectionality and Social Justice | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:51:22

Today we are going to be talking about social justice and intersectionality…two really broad topics, I know, but let’s just kick this off with a little summary of what these things are. Social justice issues are divided into two broad categories: • inter-social treatment (so how we treat each other) and • unequal government regulations (how the government applies laws to people). Inter-social treatment can be based on a variety of factors: race, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, nationality, education, economic status, or mental or physical ability. The unequal government regulation category deals with how the government uses these factors to create conditions that obstruct, limit, or deny groups access to the same opportunities and resources, relative to the rest of society. This type of regulation can lead to intentional and unintentional social injustice. Some examples of these areas are voting law, policing, environmental laws, healthcare regulation, education, and labor laws. Intersectionality is a framework that attempts to analyze the interconnected nature of social categorizations like race, gender, age, sexual orientation, etc., how they overlap to describe interdependent systems of discrimination or disadvantage for more complex social categories, and how those are impacted through unequal government regulation. So, for example, it seeks to explain how the experiences of a gay, white, non-religious woman from a poor family differ from that of a straight, black, Christian man from a middle class family and shows how the social and legal system impacts them or is applied to them differently so that we, as a society, can better pinpoint our problem points and fix them more effectively. These are fairly complex topics and breaking them down into a quick summary hardly does them justiceSupport The NonSequitur Show

Episode 12: Irreverent: A spirited discussion about the spiritual with Rev. Stephanie Clarke | File Type: audio/mp3 | Duration: 1:04:35

Rev. Stephanie Clarke started the first multi-racial, metaphysical, community in Johannesburg in the year 2000 with the intention of healing the wounds of Apartheid. It was totally successful but, as a one-woman show, I burnt out and left S. Africa. From 2005-2015 I taught and marketed English language programmes in Europe and Japan until Spirit called me back to S. Africa to take care of my elderly parents. That was in 2015. I am delighted to be home and to be back in the spiritual saddle. I regularly offer the Sunday talks at Soul Home and enjoy giving my support to Rev. Gerd Pontow, my student and successor, and our amazing rainbow community, so deeply anchored in unconditional love. It is truly a prototype for what is possible in South Africa.  Episode 10: Rocketman: The Mad Mike Hughes Interview on Flat Earth & NASA Conspiracy | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 26:00

In 2016 Hughes launched a failed fundraising attempt for a rocket that earned only $310. After converting to believe in a flat Earth later that year, Hughes gained support of the flat-Earth community. His post-flat-Earth fundraising campaign made its $7,875 goal. He intends to make multiple rocket journeys, culminating in a flight to outer space, where he believes he will be able to take a picture of the entire Earth as a flat disk. He claimed in November 2017 that the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) had given him verbal permission more than a year ago to launch his rocket, pending approval from the Federal Aviation Administration; however, a BLM spokesman said its local field office had no record of speaking to Hughes at the time. According to the BLM, after seeing some news articles about the planned launch, a BLM representative reached out to Hughes with concerns. The rocket launch was originally scheduled for the weekend of 25 November 2017; Hughes then rescheduled for 2 December, blaming ongoing difficulties in obtaining permissions. Hughes moved his launch pad four miles so that he will take off and lands on private property; however, the BLM maintains he still needs to fill out permits. Hughes defiantly stated the dispute would not stop him flying: "I'm a daredevil. I'm not much for authority or rules." The untested initial rocket is intended to reach a speed of 500 mph; further rocket trips, to be launched from a balloon 20 miles up, are intended to reach above the atmosphere into outer space. Hughes acknowledged there are risks, telling the Associated Press: "It's scary as hell. But none of us are getting out of this world alive." A fundraising campaign to cover the costs of the delay raised only around 100 of its 10,000 USD goal. On 3 February 2018 Hughes live-streamed another attempted to launch in front of spectators, but the rocket failed to ignite.Special Guests: Aron Ra and “Mad Mike” Hughes.Support The NonSequitur Show
