The Candid Frame: Conversations on Photography

John Keatley often self-characterizes his work as a reflection of himself, rather than the individual he is photographing. In recent years, his journey of self-discovery has brought clarity to emotions that have always been present yet were previously unknown.

Vincent von Kleef is an Amerstdam-based photographer who used the social-networking power of Facebook to solicit the participation of people in his community. His portrait series provided me not only subjects for his photography but also allowed him to reveal the personalities and stories of the city’s inhabitants.

We share the mic again with artist, photographer, podcaster and now author, Jeffery Saddoris from the On Taking Pictures podcast.

Raised in Hamilton and Toronto, Ontario, Blake Jorgenson headed west to Whistler, B.C. in 1993 at the age of 18 in search of adventure. Now in his thirties, he has won several prestigious industry awards, including the Pro Photographer Showdown at Whistler’s World Ski and Snowboard Festival and Powder Magazine’s Photo of the Year.

David J. Murphy is a photojournalist and filmmaker who currently works near Charleston, S.C. He began his career 16 years ago when he joined the U.S. Marine Corps as a combat photojournalist. After leaving the Marine Corps he moved to New York City and worked as a freelance photojournalist.

Ralph Velasco is President, Founder and CEO (Chief Experience Officer) of PhotoEnrichment Programs, Inc. d.b.a. PhotoEnrichment Adventures, as well as a travel photography instructor and international guide who has photographed in over 60 countries on 6 continents.

Chuck Anerino is a photographer whose work revolves around his family. Practicing a style described as family documentary, Anerino uses the sensibility of a documentary photographer to capture lives of his family, particularly his young boys.

Kwasi Boyd-Bouldin (b. 1977) is a Los Angeles based photographer whose work focuses on the urban environment and how a neighborhoods physical composition reflects the lives of its inhabitants. He is best known for The Los Angeles Recordings, an ongoing documentary project comprised of photo essays about L.A.’s rapidly changing urban landscape.

Lauren Welles is a freelance photographer based in NYC.  Prior to becoming a full- time photographer, she spent 16 years practicing law.  The same skills that were invaluable to her as an attorney-- the ability to problem solve, and to see something from multiple perspectives—have been indispensable to her career as a photographer.

We end the 2017 season of The Candid Frame with a live panel on street photography that was recorded live at this year’s Miami Street Photography Festival. Led by TCF host, Ibarionex Perello, emerging photographers Forrest Walker, Niki Gleoudi and Chris Suspect to discuss what drives each photographer to create the kinds of image that they do in the genre of street photography. Arthur Meyerson is recognized as one of America’s finest photographers. Since 1974, this native Texan has traveled throughout the world, creating award-winning advertising, corporate and editorial photographs, as well as an extensive body of fine art imagery. His latest book is titled, The Journey.

Colin Westerbeck is a writer, curator, and teacher of the history of photography. He is also the co-author along with Joel Meyerowitz of Bystander: A History of Street Photography, which has recently been released in a new edition. We sat down with Colin to talk about the how street photography has changed since the decades since the release of the first version of the book and how he and Joel approached this new edition.

Veronica G. Cardenas is a documentary photographer based in the Rio Grande Valley. Migration issues are a recurring theme that she explores. Her work has been shown at the United Nations, Long Island City Arts in New York City, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley-UTRGV, Festival of International Books and Arts, FESTIBA, South Texas College, and Festival Internacional de Poesia Latinoamericana, FEIPOL among others.

Reg Campbell is a San Antonio based photographer. A comedian at heart, he has a penchant for documenting people in their environment, and showcasing their individual personalities. With these values in mind Reg would love to take you ideas and turn them into visual representations. Reg faced a more personal challenges earlier this year when he was diagnosed with leukemia. He joined Ibarionex on the stage of 4x5 Photo Fest in San Antonio, just weeks after receiving a bone marrow transplant.
