 Who’s the Next Chipotle? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 26 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:29:48

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Eric Dutram, Zacks ETF strategist and editor of the Surprise Trader and ETF Investor portfolios, to discuss one of Tracey’s favorite topics: the restaurant chains. Tracey is always getting asked on Twitter: “Who’s the next Chipotle?” Chipotle (CMG) went public in January 2006. If you bought it at the IPO, you’ve seen a 888% return. Not too shabby. Starbucks has had an even more amazing run, though. Since its 1992 IPO, shares have jumped 17,290%. Restaurant stocks can be a lucrative investment, if you guess right. Who’s on Tracey’s and Eric’s radar as possible contenders for Chipotle’s throne? There are plenty of good restaurant chains that aren’t yet public. Some of their favorites include Panda Express, Blaze Pizza, and the “good for you” chains like Protein Bar, Toronto-based Freshii, Lyfe Kitchen out of Memphis and Sweetgreen, which has 40 restaurants nationwide and the backing of some of the big names in the restaurant industry including Shake Shack’s founder. These are companies you should keep an eye on for possible IPOs so you can get in on the ground floor if they do go public. With companies that are already public, there are a lot of smaller restaurant chains that could be the “next” Chipotle. Tracey likes Fiesta Restaurant Group (FRGI), but only for one of its brands, and El Pollo Loco (LOCO), the Mexican fire-grilled chain out of California. Eric chats about some surprising names including Fogo de Chao (FOGO), the Restaurant ETF (BITE) and a chain that has only 2,000 restaurants but which has room to expand much, much more. Tune into this week’s podcast to find out the mystery restaurant chain that Eric thinks could be the “next” Chipotle and to hear which of Fiesta’s two chains Tracey finds unique. And be sure to tweet at @TraceyRyniec or @EricDutram your picks for chains that could be the “next” Chipotle. There are a lot of local, regional chains that might be little known outside of a certain part of the country. They want to hear from you with your favorites.  Millennials: Scared to Invest or Just Broke? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 25 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:23:06

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Ryan McQueeney and Andrew Steele, two of Zacks financial writing interns, and also millennials, to talk about what it’s like being a millennial in 2016. Are millennials investing in stocks or are they just too broke? If not, why not? Many of them basically “came of age” during the Great Recession, which saw one of the worst bear markets in stocks in the last 50 years. But if they do have any extra cash to put into the stock market, after paying their student loans, what kinds of companies most interest them? The millennials grew up with Amazon (AMZN), Facebook’s Instagram (FB) and Twitter (TWTR) as part of their everyday lives. Does that mean they want to invest in these companies? What about “old” name companies like the railroads or General Electric (GE)? And is Apple (AAPL) now, gasp, “old”? Some answers may surprise you. While the millennials face a lot of challenges other generations before them didn’t have, such as a tight and competitive job market and soaring rents, it’s also been a great time to be a stock market investor. Find out all about what millennials really think about investing, why Tracey is “depressed” and more, on this week’s interesting podcast.  Is it Finally Time to Invest in India? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 24 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:33:30

Welcome to Episode #24 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Neena Mishra, Zacks ETF strategist and Editor of Zacks Income Investor portfolio, to discuss the economic future of India and how investors can capture the growth of this rising star. Originally one of the “BRIC” countries, India has been talked about as a possible break-out economy for seemingly decades but it has never really happened. But with new political leadership, which has pledged extensive economic reforms which they are still trying to push through the lower and upper houses, India’s economy is one of the fastest growing in the world. Last year, it surpassed China’s growth rate and is expected to again this year with its GDP jumping between 7.5% and 8.0%, higher than China’s expected growth rate of 6.5%- 7.0%. How do investors get in on this story? Otherwise, the way to play India is really through ETF investing. The ETFs that Neena likes are the iShares MSCI India (INDA), the iShares MSCI India Small Cap (SMIN), the EGShares India Small Cap (SCIN), which trades with very low volume, and the EGShares India Consumer ETF (INCO). Indians are also still heavily invested in gold and gold is still the gift of choice at most Indian weddings. The Gold ETF (GLD) is also a way to play India’s growing middle class. What about buying individual Indian stocks that trade on the US exchanges? Tracey and Neena discuss whether or not this is a good idea. If you must buy individual names, Tracey gives her 2 top Indian stock picks: Tata Motors (TTM) and Icici Bank (IBN). What else should you know about investing in India?  Can Jack Dorsey Lead Both Twitter and Square to Success? - Zacks Market Edge PodCast 23 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:27:43

Welcome to Episode #23 of the Zacks Market Edge Podcast. Every week, host and Zacks stock strategist, Tracey Ryniec, will be joined by guests to discuss the hottest investing topics in stocks, bonds and ETFs and how it impacts your life. In this episode, Tracey is joined by Brian Bolan, Zacks Equity Strategist and Editor of the Game Changer and Stocks Under $10 services, to discuss how Jack Dorsey is doing so far at the helm of not just one, but two public companies: Twitter (TWTR) and Square (SQ). Can Twitter Be Saved? A co-founder of Twitter, he was appointed CEO in October 2015 while, at the same time, he took his other business, financial software and lending provider Square Inc, public. Just going IPO is enough to send even seasoned CEOs ducking for cover, let alone trying to run another business, one of which is struggling. Do you use Twitter? If you answered “no”, you’re not alone. Twitter’s core monthly users fell to 305 million in the fourth quarter from 307 million in the prior quarter as the platform struggles to obtain new users. Yet it’s still expected to grow revenue at a double digit rate in 2016. Shares fell to new post-IPO lows in 2016. What will Dorsey have to do to turn it around? Or is Twitter a lost cause? Square Reports For the First Time Square recently reported its first earnings report as a public company. It was better than expected, even though the company isn’t profitable and it took a wider loss in the quarter than a year ago. But revenue rose 49% in the quarter. One big area of possible growth is in Square Capital, its lending arm. It extended $400 million in loans in 2015 through 70,000 advances to 50,000 of its 2 million customers. But there’s a lot of competition in this space. On Deck Capital (ONDK) and LendingClub Corporation (LC) have been in the small business loan market for a while. Last quarter, On Deck saw loan origination rise 51% year over year. LendingClub’s jumped 91%. None of these players has significant market share, yet, which means there are opportunities there.

Alibaba or Amazon: Who Will Win in India? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 22 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:27:05

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Sheraz Mian, Zacks Director of Research, to discuss the e-commerce and retail landscape in India. Sheraz recently returned from a business trip to India where he saw firsthand the impact that the spread of smartphones is having on India, especially when it comes to retail. E-commerce makes up less than 1% of all Indian retail sales but is growing quickly. E-commerce sales are expected to jump to $55 billion by 2018, up from $15 billion in 2015. There are 3 big players in India’s e-commerce industry: 1. Flipkart, a homegrown Indian marketplace, which has about 45% of the market 2. Snapdeal, also a homegrown marketplace, with 26% of the market 3. Amazon (AMZN), with about 15% of the market Alibaba (BABA) is also a player as it has backed Snapdeal and there are rumors it might take a position in Flipkart. It also owns a stake in Paytm, India’s largest mobile wallet company with about 140 million users. A lot of challenges await including addressing the delivery system and payments. Most Indians don’t have credit cards so cash is king. That’s why the payment systems are becoming almost as important as the marketplaces themselves. As for delivering the goods in India’s cities, it’s instrumental to look at how the dabbawallahs deliver over 200,000 lunches to office workers in Mumbai every day, and the implications for e-commerce. I really recommend the 2013 movie The Lunchbox now available on Netflix and Amazon. You’ll be amazed at how they transport lunches via train and bikes to office buildings while rarely making a mistake or delivering late. But for all the challenges facing the retailers, there are some restaurant chains who have managed to make it. They offer valuable lessons. McDonald’s (MCD) has been successful by tweaking its menu towards Indian tastes, which means offering a lot of vegetarian options and spices. Dunkin Donuts (DNKN) and Domino’s (DPZ) have also managed to thrive in India. Both franchises are managed by Jubilant Foodworks, which trades on the Bombay stock exchange. But do Indians really want to eat donuts? And why is Dunkin Donuts called Dunkin Donuts & More in India? Sheraz explains how they found their niche. India is an amazing growth opportunity for many global brands. Retail is an untapped area. Who is going to be able to take advantage of the opportunities?  Is Everyone Wrong About Peak Auto? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 21 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:24:21

In this episode, Tracey is joined by David Bartosiak, Zacks Equity Strategist and Editor of the Momentum Trader and Home Run Investor services. They discuss one of David’s favorite topics: cars. Cars are second only to sneakers in David’s list of obsessions. You can listen to the podcast with David and Tracey discussing the magic of sneakers, and what stocks to buy to cash in on the hot athletic shoe phenomena, 2015 was a record year for car sales in America, with 17.5 million cars sold. Most analysts believed in the thesis of “peak auto” which meant that financing wasn’t going to stay low forever, the number of consumers who needed a new car would shrink, and that the record high was the best it was ever going to get. In other words, it’s all downhill from here for the auto industry. Or was it? 2016 has started out hot, as SUV and truck sales have soared to new highs. February was the best month for American auto sales since February 2000. Tracey and David debate the “peak auto” bullish and bearish arguments. They also discuss how investors can get a piece of the action if this isn’t the bottom. David urges investors to think outside the box and consider non-traditional plays on the auto industry like Nvidia (NVDA), along with the car makers themselves such as General Motors (GM), Ford, and Tesla (TSLA). Tracey likes the auto retailers, specifically Lithia (LAD) as well as some of the parts makers like Lear Corporation (LEA). Should you be bullish on the auto industry?  Why There Won't Be a Recession in 2016 - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 20 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:24:45

In this episode, Tracey is joined by John Blank, Zacks Chief Equity Strategist, to cover a topic that is on everyone’s lips: Is the US economy headed into a recession in 2016? Here is the original article: http://www.zacks.com/stock/news/208369/why-there-wont-be-a-recession-in-2016 John has a PhD in economics, so he looks at the economy from a data point of view, much like the Fed. He says there are two components the Federal Reserve looks at: GDP and employment. Employment is especially important. In 2007, monthly employment started going into the negative well ahead of the economy. It was a sign of the recession to come. In 2016, the employment numbers have been particularly strong. The unemployment rate is at 4.9%. Monthly job creation has averaged over 200,000 the prior 3 months. Even the weekly jobless claims don’t hint at any stresses despite the losses in the energy sector, with only 262,000 claims last week, the lowest since November 2015. But what about all that gloomy manufacturing data? Isn’t it a warning sign? John explains that with the purchasing managers indexes (PMIs), that the component with the input costs has plunged due to commodities prices falling. But future orders and backlog have held up well. Purchasing managers are also adjusting their behavior as crude prices continue to fall. They are being conditioned to wait until the last minute to place orders because the prices keep falling. What about the crude crash? Could that push the US into a recession? While there will be some pain in the oil producing states like Texas and the Dakotas, the other states will benefit from the gasoline stimulus. Gas prices are below $2 a gallon even in Chicago, which is historically one of the most expensive markets. In other parts of the country, it is even lower. This is real savings and is finally showing up in restaurants and retail sales. There are other dangers to the economy such as a falling stock market. John explains how big of a pullback the S&P 500 would have to have to push the US economy into a recession. A mere 10% sell off won’t do it. Tracey and John also discuss other possible stimuli to the US economy, including stimulus coming from areas you might not have thought about. If there isn’t a recession, what stocks should you be thinking about buying for 2016? Tracey and John are still betting on the consumer. Tune in to this week’s podcast to find out why they like Casey’s General Stores: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/CASY?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Sherwin Williams: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/SHW?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Williams & Sonoma: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/WSM?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Home Depot: http://www.zacks.com/stock/quote/HD?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod Homebuilders ETF: http://www.zacks.com/funds/etf/XHB/profile?cid=cs-soundcloud-ft-pod

Secrets of Women Shoppers: The Retail Stocks They Love - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 17 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:25:14

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Maddy Johnson, Zacks Stock News Reporter, to discuss the trends in women’s retail. All is not doom and gloom in retail right now, despite the pessimism in the air. There are two trends dominating women’s retail that are hot for 2016: 1. The rise of women’s athletic wear; and 2. The popularity of lower-priced accessories, make-up, hair care, sunglasses, and jewelry. How can investors play these two strong trends? The leisure wear market is exploding with active wear sales for both men and women expected to be over a $40 billion market in 2016. But companies are only now realizing the potential, especially with women shoppers. Nike (NKE) says its women’s business is growing at twice the rate of its men’s business. In the last fiscal year, women’s grew at 20% compared to just 9% for men’s. It’s a $5.7 billion business for Nike, expected to nearly double to $11 billion in the next five years. Competitor Under Armour is also focusing on women as 30% of its sales are now from that group. But the specialty retailers are head of the game and have already been cashing in and you can too. According to Tracey and Maddy, lululemon (LULU) is still the industry-leader in yoga wear despite its management shake-ups and its yoga pant fiasco. Hot on its heels, though, is the Gap’s (GPS) Athleta brand. Athleta is slowly rolling out nationwide and now has 118 stores. But to invest in Athleta, you’ll have to buy the Gap’s other brands, all of which have been struggling including Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy. Is this a risk worth taking? L Brands (LB) may sell a lot of lingerie through its Victoria’s Secret brand and a lot of hand lotion and soap in Bath & Body Work, but it’s the PINK line, specifically aimed at tween and teenage girls, that is the diamond in the rough. Maddy and Tracey explain what makes it so popular and why it makes L Brands a formidable competitor. But it is Ulta (ULTA), the beauty retailer, which is the leader of the pack. Same-store-sales in the third quarter soared 12.8% with retail up 10.9%, including 10.9% in their salon sales. E-commerce sales jumped 56.3% and now make up 190 basis points of the same-store-sales comp. Tracey and Maddy discuss just what it is that makes women shop, and then shop again, at Ulta instead of their local drugstore. Ulta has a secret weapon. And when WILL Ulta finally get some stores in Manhattan? They also gush about one chain declaring it “their favorite.” Listen to the podcast to find out which retailer they love and why you should make a bet on the stocks of the hottest women’s retailers.  How Low Will The S&P 500 Go? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 15 - Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:18:15

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Zacks Stock Strategist, Editor of the Tactical Trader and the Follow the Money Trader, Kevin Cook. The stock market is in the midst of a pullback. There’s so much going on in the stock market right now, that Tracey and Kevin recorded two episodes of the podcast. This is Part 2 of their discussion on what you should do now that stocks are selling off. In this episode, Kevin and Tracey discuss what the technicians and big money managers are saying about the stock market and how much further it may have to fall. Some numbers being thrown out, such as S&P 500 at 1300, are pretty darn scary. Street sentiment is obviously very bearish. But Kevin has noticed that recently several big money managers have gotten even more bearish, including Guggenheim Partners Global Chief Investment Officer, Scott Minerd. Minerd is usually middle of the road and is not a perma-bear. So what does that mean? Kevin has also run across some interesting trends in the S&P 500 this year. He explains the difference between the equal weight S&P 500 index and the market weight index (SPY) and the significance of the equal weight S&P 500 hitting February 2014 lows while the market weight index is barely at October lows. Tracey tracks the Russell 2000 small cap index for clues about market trends. The small caps have been a disaster in 2016. Does she see any signs that the small caps have bottomed? Kevin and Tracey like to use ETFs when there is a lot of volatility and these market conditions are no exception. Kevin likes the healthcare stocks. His favorite ETF in that sector is the Powershares Dynamic Pharmaceutical ETF (PJP), which combines big cap biotechs with big cap mainstream drug stocks. To play the small caps, Tracey says you can always invest in the general iShares Russell 2000 ETF (IWM). But she also likes the more niche ETFs, Vanguard Small-Cap Value ETF (VBR) and Vanguard Small-Cap Growth ETF (VBK). She discusses which one of those is her favorite and why. I bet you can guess. Find out all you need to know about this market sell off from Zacks experts, Tracey and Kevin, on Part 2 of this week’s podcast.  The Stock Sell-Off: What Should You Do Now? - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 15 Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:16:45

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Zacks Stock Strategist, Editor of the Tactical Trader and the Follow the Money Trader, Kevin Cook. The stock market is in the midst of a pullback. In Part 1 of 2-episodes, Tracey and Kevin discuss the reasons the stock market is weak right now and what you should do if your portfolio has blown up. In Part 2, Kevin discusses what the technicians and big money managers are saying about the stock market and how much further it may have to fall. Kevin and Tracey are rare bulls among an otherwise bearish market. Both believe this sell-off will be healthy and reset valuations. Tracey and Kevin discuss 3 areas that are impacting the market right now including the crude price plunge, manufacturing weakness, and China. Kevin also discusses the chaos in the bond market, focusing on Barclays High Yield Bond ETF (JNK) and High Yield Corporate Bonds (HYG). Are bonds sending a warning signal? Even with the sell-off, Kevin and Tracey have favorite stocks right now. Kevin likes tech and healthcare. Tracey likes the consumer discretionary names, especially the restaurants. Investors have been pouring money into the big, safe names. But how “safe” are Gilead (GILD), Starbucks (SBUX) and McDonald’s (MCD)? It was a great quarter by both Starbucks and McDonald’s but Tracey says valuations are high on both companies right now. However, all is not doom and gloom. She’ll reveal her theory on why it’s such a great time to be a restaurant chain. Find out all you need to know about this market sell off from Zacks experts, Tracey and Kevin, on Part 1 of this week’s podcast.  How to Screen for the Best Stocks in a Volatile Market - Zacks Market Edge Podcast 14 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:32:27

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Zacks’ Vice President, Editor of the Options Trader service and Zacks stock screening guru, Kevin Matras. The stock market is rocky to start the year, how can investors keep their emotions in check to find the best stocks to invest in? Kevin’s advice is to have a plan, whether it be stop-losses or something else, and stick to it. Kevin also divulges his favorite stock screens that use both fundamental and technical analysis to find the best Zacks #1 (Strong Buy) and #2 (Buy) stocks. They are screens he runs all the time. If you’re going to be invested in a volatile stock market, you might as well buy the stocks that have the best fundamentals. Kevin and Tracey also talk about the more basic stock screens that anyone can run that you can find on Zacks.com on the Screening tab. If you’re a Zacks Premium member, or if you take the 30-day free trial, you can access 20 more predefined screens that combine the Zacks Rank with Growth and Value criteria. These are some of the screens that Tracey runs regularly. Finally, Kevin and Tracey have stocks that they like even though this market seems ominous. They have different trading strategies. Kevin screens for stocks near their highs with solid fundamentals. Tracey likes stocks that have sold off. They both like the healthcare sector, with Lannett Inc.  Brutal Earnings Season? Hide Out in These 5 Blue Chip Stocks -- Zacks Market Edge Podcast 13 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:24:41

In this episode, Tracey is joined by Zacks’ Director of Research Sheraz Mian to discuss the fourth quarter earnings outlook. Sheraz is Zacks’ expert on the earnings outlook. His Earnings Trends articles appear every week on Zacks.com. Be sure to check out the articles every week to get updates on earnings estimates. Alcoa (AA) has already reported so the earnings season has now officially started. Earnings estimates for the fourth quarter have been sliding since October. Total earnings for the S&P 500 are expected to be down 7.4% from the fourth quarter last year. Revenue is forecast to be down 4.7% year over year as well. But is it all the energy sector’s fault? Energy’s earnings are expected to be down 67% year over year with revenues falling 37.9%. Unfortunately, the earnings gloom extends beyond energy with four other sectors expected to have double digit earnings declines in the fourth quarter. Anyone watching the commodities rout, won’t be surprised at the dismal outlook for these sectors. But there are still 3 sectors that are supposed to see growth. Is the favored tech sector one of them? China is also on the minds of investors. Will S&P 500 companies be warning about weakness in China or is the Chinese economy better than many believe? Nike (NKE) has already reported earnings and it didn’t have any revenue problem in China. Starbucks (SBUX) also recently announced it was planning an additional 500 stores in China, on top of the 2,000 it already has there, as it remains bullish on that market. Is success in China really a case-by-case basis? For investors, this earnings season looks to be a tricky one. Tracey and Sheraz discuss how to manage it, including 5 stocks that have solid track records of beating the Zacks Consensus Estimate over the last 5 years. For example, blue chip companies General Electric (GE) and L Brands (LB) have perfect earnings surprise records. Neither has missed in 5 years. Who else has a perfect earnings surprise track record over the last 5 years that you should watch this earnings season? Listen to this week’s podcast to find out.
