Episode #14 – Considering the Look and Feel of our Religion | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 32:37

Summary: In this episode of the CrossTalk podcast, Wes, Sam, and James consider our preoccupation with the “aesthetics” of Christian worship. Why do some of us have to have things look and feel a certain way in order to feel like we have worshiped? Why are we so concerned with the look and feel of our religion and our worship? Quotes and Links Referenced in this Episode: * Complete Quote from Catholic Encyclopedia – “We need not shrink from admitting that candles, like incense and lustral water, were commonly employed in pagan worship and the rites paid to the dead. But the Church, from a very early period, took them into her service, just as she adopted many other things indifferent in themselves, which seemed proper to enhance the splendor of religious ceremony. We must not forget that most of these adjuncts to worship, like music, lights, perfumes, ablutions, floral decorations, canopies, fans, screens, bells, vestments, etc. were not identified with any idolatrous cult in particular but they were common to almost all cults.” (Catholic Encyclopedia, Vol. III, pg. 246.) * Alexander Campbell Reference on how we dress for worship.  Episode #11 – Should We Be Loyal to a Particular Congregation? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 36:42

Summary: In this episode of the CrossTalk podcast, Sam Dominguez, James Sumners, and Wes McAdams discuss the question, “Should we be loyal to a particular congregation?” When we have conflicts in the church, is it pleasing to God for us to move to another congregation? How can we keep from being “church-hoppers”? E-Mail That We Discussed: I have been following the blog and podcast for some time now, so I thought I’d throw out a topic you could talk about sometime. In my area, there seems to be an issue with what someone I know has called ” church loyalty.” It seems that the Lord’s church in our area has developed a culture or mindset of “hopping” to a different congregation at the first sign of adversity. I’m not talking about doctrinal disputes or even disagreements over traditions–it seems like if any interpersonal issue comes up between people, the first response is for someone to leave and go somewhere else instead of working things out together. Is “church loyalty” an ideal that we should be striving for? If so, how do we cultivate this spirit in our local congregations so that we can work out our issues together? I would really be interested to hear you guys discuss this on the podcast. Thanks for all you do!
