The Kadarius Toney Trade: A Scouting Perspective | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Matt Waldman's RSP examines the pending deal between the Giants and Chiefs involving mercurial wide receiver Kadarius Toney. The Kadarius Toney Trade Is A Potential Win-Win-Win Note: You can also listen to these and additional thoughts by opting for the podcast at the bottom of the page.  I think the Kadarius Toney deal is a good trade. Giants' Head Coach Brian Daboll inherited immature players at the wide receiver position in Toney and Kenny Golladay. Immaturity is seen as a negative and it can be. But in this case, it's more about youth, lack of perspective, and/or these players being unintentionally enabled to think they are better than they are. Fred Taylor was a dynamic and immature talent early in his career. I actually used much of the behind-the-scenes details an NFL personnel employee shared with me about Taylor to formulate this RSP Writer's Project exercise nearly a decade ago. Taylor grew out of his behavior and became a locker-room stalwart. I have to believe that when Daboll took the Giants' gig, he saw Toney as the most salvageable. Golladay earned a second deal off the backs of Golden Tate and Marvin Jones. These veterans created optimal matchups for Golladay and he earned targets from a tough, big-armed passer in Matthew Stafford. Obviously, Golladay has NFL skills to produce at a high level, but he needs more surrounding talent to achieve that productivity than a true primary receiver. Unfortunately, the Giants expected Golladay to be a primary option and it was an unrealistic expectation. Gabriel Davis' touters among NFL organizations and fantasy players in dynasty formats should take heed. (Also see Alvin Harper and Peerless Price for additional historical context). Toney is an immense talent who can beat anyone one-on-one. Combined with his ball tracking and open-field skills, he has many of the traits to become a primary receiver. Behavior and habits in and out of the facility were the forms of maturity questions for Toney. Where Toney Has to Improve to Realize This Trade's Potential The inherent issue with Toney's game that concerned me since Florida was how out of control his footwork can be. He uses a lot of wide-radius cuts that lead to slipping and awkward planting with routes and ball carrying. I was worried injuries would be a potential recurring issue because most receivers make the required dynamic moves within routes in an efficient manner that’s trained. He can do things that work and, when they do, work at a high level. The downside is the sustainability of his movement style. Toney’s moves are so dynamic but out of control, there's a logical underpinning to his availability being an issue. The moves that make him productive may require too much from his body to sustain. In other words, he may not be effective unless “healthier” than what the average threshold for healthy is for most. That is another factor with scouting that isn’t underscored enough: Does the player have to be healthy at a higher threshold than what coaches normally expect from a player in order to produce? This is different than lacking toughness. Movement styles can be tough to unlearn and deficiencies may make the player an all-or-nothing option because they need to be 100 percent to execute these physically-demanding movements. Scouts and organizations have to be cognizant of this possibility when scouting talent. Combine these two factors of injury and maturity and it presents head coaches with a choice. In almost every situation of this type, a veteran head coach prefers reliability to mercurial behavior -- even when it is high-upside talent. Daboll knew he faced these challenges with Toney ...

Matt Waldman’s RSP Scouting Glossary: Stalk Blocking Basics with Charlotte WR Grant DuBose | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Matt Waldman defines the basics of Stalk Blocking in this edition of the RSP NFL Scouting Glossary with the help of a play from Charlotte NFL Draft Prospect, WR Grant DuBose. What Is Stalk Blocking? When the blocking assignment calls for an offensive player detached from the formation to work toward a defender to execute the block, this is a stalk block. This method involves the receiver being the aggressor/initiator of the interaction without manipulating the defender into believing that he's running a route. The Basic Techniques of Stalk Blocking * Break down in the Contact Zone. * The Contact Zone is within two yards of the defender. * Breaking down involves these components: * A square stance: The hips and pads pointed squarely at the opponent. * The feet are placed at shoulder width to generate a solid base/anchoring point during contact. * The knees and hips are bent in an athletic position to solidify the base/anchoring/leverage. * Maintaining the wide base by shuffling the feet. * Take the air out: Earning a chest-to-chest position with the defender to maximize leverage. * Don't overextend: * Keeping the head and eyes up. * The upper body should not be too far over the knees in an unstable stance. * These body positioning points encourage a stable base for an attack or to handle contact from the opponent. * Hand and arm positions: The intent is to attack the center of the opponent's gravity and maintain a stable position. * Tight hands aiming for the chest plate of the opponent. * Elbows bent. * The punch: Some blocks don't require a punch. When they do . . . * Tight hands * Elbows bent * Uppercut motion * Rolling through the hips with an upward trajectory to generate force without overextending the frame. * Running the feet after contact. * Maintaining a wide base * Shuffling the feet * Maintaining the hands tight and in the chest of the opponent as much as possible.  NFL Players Who Fit/Don’t Fit Our Archetypes: Matt Waldman’s RSP Scout Talk with Russ Lande | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Montreal Alouettes’ head of scouting Russ Lande and the RSP’s Matt Waldman go position-by-position and discuss productive NFL players who fit or don't fit our desired archetypes at each position. Who are our types of players at each position — players we might take ahead of more productive options at the position who don't fit our archetype when building a team? That's the topic of this week's scout talk with Montreal Alouettes U.S. Head of Scouting Russ Lande and Rookie Scouting Portfolio author Matt Waldman. They go position-by-position, discussing the traits and skills that will gain or lose value for them when considering what they value at each position. This is the first of a two-part conversation on this topic that will eventually cover most of the positions. This week: * Why Kyler Murray's game, a good young passer, goes against our type of desired player relative to Lamar Jackson or even less productive players like Davis Mills, Geno Smith, and Derek Carr. * We appreciate Mike Williams and Kadarius Toney but we discuss what they have in common that doesn't fit our type for the receiver position while bringing up others who do. * Why Colts' cornerback Kenny Moore's game encompasses a lot of qualities that are missing from other players we discuss. * What put Drue Tranquill's career on a better track than Johnathan Abraham's? Why we loved Grant Delpit pre-draft but how he hasn't tightened up his game to be a productive fit in the NFL. And what all of this has to do with what we seek from safeties. * Why Myles Jacks Jack is a linebacker type that Russ covets and Denzel Perryman is a type he wouldn't build around but would make good use of his services? Why Matt covets Eric Kendricks and Pete Woerner. * Who would Matt prefer as a running back type between a player he loves to watch as a fan and a backup he appreciates more as an evaluator? The player who runs on the edge of abandon that Russ values and a productive player who doesn't fit Russ' archetype at the position. Why Ezekiel Elliott is still a top back? In two weeks, we'll cover the offensive and defensive lines and finish up tight and running backs. Another great pod that’s appointment listening. https://youtu.be/0DvJboAS4pE And of course, if you want to know about the rookies from this draft class, you will find the most in-depth analysis of offensive skill players available (QB, RB, WR, and TE), with the 2022 Rookie Scouting Portfolio for $21.95.  Matt’s new RSP Dynasty Rankings and Two-Year Projections Package is available for $24.95 If you’re a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that’s included at no additional charge.   If you’re a fantasy owner and interested in purchasing past publications for $9.95 each, the 2012-2020 RSPs also have a Post-Draft Add-on that’s included at no additional charge.   Best yet, proceeds from sales are set aside for a year-end donation to Darkness to Light to combat the sexual abuse of children.

RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Clapping or Gator Catching | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary defines Clapping/Gator Catching, a sub-optimal technique with hand positioning for wide receivers.  Why Is Hand Positioning Vital for Receiver Play? The shape, spin, trajectory, and velocity of a thrown football require a pass catcher to attack the target with methods that allow the receiver an opportunity to achieve several objectives. * Meet the ball at the earliest point of arrival. * Slow the spin of the ball in a controlled manner that reduces the potential for a violent recoil. * Make the catch with the first attempt to maximize efficiency. * Optimal hand positioning creates easier second-chance attempts to win the ball. * Secure the target quickly enough to reposition the ball away from tight coverage. * Secure the target quickly enough to maintain the path of the route and maximize yardage after the catch. A football travels at a high speed and the spin isn't always tight. Combined with the oblong shape and texture, there are several challenges for a player that don't include the position of the defender and/or the intensity of contact that the defender will deliver as the receiver attempts the catch. What Is Optimal Hand Positioning to Catch a Football? The optimal receiving techniques begin with the fingertips. Because of the ball's spin and shape as well as the speed a quarterback can deliver it, the ball is prone to a violent recoil with it strikes a singular, flat surface. Throw a football against a wall and watch how violently and unpredictably it rebounds from the surface. The same thing happens when the ball strikes the palm of your hand — a singular, flat surface. The fingertips are marvels of human engineering because when 6-8 of them meet an oblong object that's arriving with great velocity and high RPMs, they have the precision to apply subtle pressure that stops the spin. If the precision of the fingertips working in tandem isn't perfect, it will still reduce the spin to a manageable movement — a soft and slower recoil that's easier to track for a second attempt at the ball compared to the ball recoiling violently off the palms, chest or helmet. The best way to position the hands so the fingertips can stop the spin and control the ball depends on the trajectory of the target. If it's a target above the waistline, the hands should be extended outward with the thumbs and index fingers forming a triangle. This isn't a perfect representation because the hands should be cupped a little more so the rest of the fingertips are in a position to grip the target, but you get the basic idea.   If the ball arrives below the waistline, the hands should be extended outward with the pinkies together as if you're holding them together to cup food. Gator-Catching/Clapping: A Common Technique Error Watch a young child learning how to catch a ball it's common to see them attempt to clap their hands onto each side of the ball. It's a logical idea but an inefficient one because it requires a lot more timing and coordination to meet a moving object with both hands traveling from opposite directions than it does to have your hands in a fixed position as the ball arrives. It also encourages initial contact of the ball with the palms rather than the fingertips and this leads to a violent and unpredictable recoil. If the hands miss completely, the ball has a violent recoil off the surface of the receiver's facemask or chest. Although college and NFL receivers have spent hundreds if not thousands of hours catching the football, there are scenarios that influence a receiver's lapses with catch technique: * Mistracking the trajectory of the football and forced to re-adjust at the last mome...

Matt Waldman’s RSP NFL Scouting Glossary: Stem Manipulation with WR Tyler Harrell | File Type: audio/x-m4a | Duration: Unknown

Matt Waldman's RSP NFL Scouting Glossary covers the route-running concept of stem manipulation with the help of a Tyler Harrell post route. Three Methods of Stem Manipulation Playground-style moves on moves that make defenders look silly are fun to watch. They even launch careers on Instagram and TikTok. But for most routes, manipulating a defender is a far more efficient process. It has to be. As creative as these slick moves stacked in succession can be, there's a limited setting for where they work. When the quarterback is at the top of his drop, he expects his receiver to be at that the right spot at the right time. Relying too much on these moves can make a receiver late to his spot. When this doesn't happen, it can wreck a play and even ruin a drive. There are three efficient ways wide receivers attack defenders with the route phase leading up to the break (the stem): * Running at the defender. * Diving the stem inside the defender. * Widening the stem outside the defender. Good route runners are always trying to sell the defender on the belief (if even just for a flickering moment) that they might get behind him. These three manipulation tactics are efficient ways of forcing the defender to turn his hips in the wrong direction. And when a defender realizes that he has turned his hips in the wrong direction, the act of righting his position requires him to stop his feet while the receiver is running past without breaking stride. Stem Manipulation on Film Alabama wide receiver (by way of Louisville) and NFL Draft prospect, Tyler Harrell demonstrates how a receiver efficiently manipulates his stem to force the defender out of position. https://youtu.be/o_MfcCRij7M You can also find more detail on this concept (and others) on my YouTube Channel, Matt Waldman's RSP Film Room and in the RSP Cast below.
