During opening statements in the murder trial, DA Richard Fisher told the jury, “Ronald Maddux maliciously with a cold, cold heart beat and tortured this child.” While I am biased against the perpetrators who target those around them for abuse, I determined to approach the subject of the stepfather using critical thinking skills rather than my emotional gut reaction. I don’t make excuses for him and I believe in justice, but there is enlightening research about head injuries and batterers.  

Today we are going to focus on the Melisha's mother, Wanda, again and address the popular question, “Why did she stay?”  People from around the world condemned Wanda for standing by and doing nothing while Ronnie tortured Missy. Targets often are not passive victims but instead will actively anticipate and try to circumvent the things that anger their partner.
