During opening statements in the murder trial, DA Richard Fisher told the jury, “Ronald Maddux maliciously with a cold, cold heart beat and tortured this child.” While I am biased against the perpetrators who target those around them for abuse, I determined to approach the subject of the stepfather using critical thinking skills rather than my emotional gut reaction. I don’t make excuses for him and I believe in justice, but there is enlightening research about head injuries and batterers.
