Episode 167: Clark Terry Schools on Rhythm Changes | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:00

It's no secret that Clark Terry is one of my all time favorite musicians. His mastery, playfulness, and feel make, for me, the total package when it comes to what makes jazz great. This week we look at a chorus of his solo from his own composition, Haig & Haig. Normally, we drill down on a specific topic or device in these lick of the month episodes but, this month, we take a look at an entire statement and figure out what makes this story that Clark is telling so compelling. Please enjoy this episode and make sure you grab the PDF! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 166: Playing Double Time Lines Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 14:50

This week continues our discussion on approaching and ultimately being able to use double time lines in our playing. Last week we discussed the differences between feel and articulation when using double time, this week, we start to discuss actually applying these lines to our solos. We are searching for opportunities to utilize a short ii V I progression. There are several readily available suggestions including the tune Confirmation and also Rhythm Changes. The beginning stages of starting to incorporate 16th notes can be the most intimidating, but armed with this lesson, you should be able to start working them in seamlessly. Enjoy the episode!  Episode 165: Playing Double Time Lines | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 15:49

This week's episode comes from a question and a topic Barb asked in the 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community FB Group. Double time is an extremely advanced topic and something that many people have trouble with. In this episode, we give you a basic exercise that will start you down the path of getting your double time playing together. Just as with any concept in jazz, the most complicated facets come from humble beginnings. Enjoy the episode and make sure you grab the PDF! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 164: Editing Kris’s Bridge | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 21:56

In this episode, we feature another listener contribution. One of our faithful listeners and jazz super star, Kris, posted an awesome version of the bridge to Have You Met Miss Jones in our 10 Minute Jazz Lesson Community Facebook group a couple of weeks ago. I asked Kris if he minded me revising this composition on the show, and he obliged. We are only changing some minor things here, but I do believe that the new version is a bit more coherent and contains better voice leading (a subject we talk about a lot on the show!) Thanks to Kris for this fantastic piece of content! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? So excited to have Gary Alesbrook join us this week on the show to answer a few questions. In case you missed it, we featured Gary on episode 158 of the podcast.  Episode 163: Tune of the Month: Solar | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:22

This month we take a look at the great jazz standard, Solar. We are trying something different this time. We are placing a pretty serious restriction on ourselves over this tune, playing in only one octave! This may be one of the most frustrating things you have ever done but it really makes you think about the material you are playing at all times. It's so easy to fall back on what we know, and that's exactly what we confront in this episode. When confining yourself to a single octave you really have to think about where you are going and not fall back on any muscle memory or lines that you play without purpose. Enjoy the episode and the etude! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE?? Head over to our Patreon page and when you donate $3 or more a month you get this PDF and every other.  Episode 162: Melissa Aldana’s Masterful Use of Intervals | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:14

Melissa Aldana is a game changing saxophonist. Her ability to have complete freedom on the horn is inspiring. This week, we bring you one chorus of the blues from Melissa that defies logic and common sense. The thing about this transcription, though, is that it might be the hippest thing I have heard in a long time. Melissa's use of intervals and rhythm is going to make you rethink the way you approach improvisation and inspire you to take the next step. Enjoy the episode and make sure you get your hands on the PDF! WANT THE PDF THAT GOES ALONG WITH THIS EPISODE??  Episode 161: Simplifying Complicated Chords Part 2 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:26

This week is a continuation of the important information from last week's episode. In this edition, we look at both simplifying the note choice on chords and simplifying the actual chord progression when things get difficult. The combination of these two tactics allows us to play over the most complicated and fast moving progressions with relative ease. I have seen first hand the benefits that come from this type of thinking with dozens of students over the years so make sure you get to work on this material right away!  Motivation Monday: Deep Work Part 1 | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 8:35

 Episode 160: Simplifying Complicated Chords | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 13:05

This week is about limiting our note choice to provide more meaningful melodies and harmonic impact. Most of the time, if we try to fit the maximum amount of information into a given space, we will end up sounding contrived and like we are trying to fit information into a kind of improvisational clown car. This episode is all about creating statements that limit the notes we can use over a given chord. This frees up our minds to think about more than just the notes and clarifies our thinking. This will be a beneficial episode if you feel like you know WHAT to play over certain chords but can't figure out HOW to play them in an effective way. Enjoy!
