This week on FREEda's World we are recapping the epic movie Black Panther! Join myself and our strategic director, Jellisa Joseph as we unpack this monumental film and dive deep into it's portrayal of women. This week's FREEda Woman of the week is Cristina Jiménez! Cristina Jiménez is a leader in the youth-led immigrant rights movement and instrumental in creating the DACA program. By sharing her own story of being undocumented, Jiménez inspired others to come forward, and helped change the discourse on immigration. Cristina Jiménez is Executive Director & Co-founder of United We Dream (UWD), the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the country. Originally from Ecuador, Jiménez came to the U.S. with her family at the age of 13, attending high school and college as an undocumented student. She has been organizing in immigrant communities for over a decade and was part of UWD’s campaign team that led to the historic victory of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2012 that protected close to a million young immigrants from deportation. Under Jiménez’s leadership UWD has grown to a powerful network of 55 affiliates in 26 states with over 400,000 members. When you hear the term "woman of color", which group of women come to mind? For me as a black woman, I always felt that woman of color meant just black. After all, who else struggles but the black woman right? Wrong! Women of color from all backgrounds experience "the struggle". This week on FREEda's World, I am joined by my former colleague Yasmin Dwedar Esq. We discuss our experiences and long journey to esquire. Yasmin shares a bit about her background and her most recent accomplishment, being listed on Crain's (a premier NYC independent research firm) as one of NYC's top 100 female lawyers in 2018. Yasmin and I discuss how she has navigates the landscape being a muslim female attorney of color. We also touch on what life as a muslim/arab american in today's political climate looks like. At the end of the day it is all about sisterhood and womanhood. Yasmin is the first non-black woman of color to grace our podcast. It is always great to hear different perspectives from different woman of color. It takes conversations like these to bring about change. Congrats Yasmin on all of your endeavors! This week's FREEda Woman of the week is Harriet Jacobs. Harriet Jacobs was born into slavery in North Carolina. She ultimately escaped and was later freed. She chronicled her experiences in "Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" which became the first autobiography published by a female former slave. Her book described the sexual exploitation that added to the oppression of slavery for black women--a topic that is still not widely discussed. After publishing her book, Jacobs remained actively involved with the abolition movement, using her celebrity to raise money for former slaves. She drew most of her inspiration from her own experiences growing up in Chicago. Her works are some of the most highly regarded and widely read poems. On today’s show I recap my recent experience attending the first annual Haitian Ladies Weekend, that took place this past weekend in Washington D.C. The Haitian Ladies Weekend is a by product of the hard work and vision of its founder Nadine Duplessy Kearns. Nadine began a tradition of brunching with fellow Haitian Women 12 years ago with the sole purpose of creating a space where women can connect, build and support each other. What started out as five women quickly grew to over 60. 12 years later the tradition still stands, but this time Nadine and her team decided to do it even bigger and host the first annual Haitian Ladies Weekend which included the first ever symposium hosted at Howard University. 175 Women from all over the United States, and Haiti, came together in sisterhood to celebrate, uplift and empower each other. Women are so often portrayed as being haters, manipulative, envious and jealous. It’s not uncommon for you to hear that women do not work well with each other. This weekend was a clear juxtaposition of that. Instead, what I experienced this past weekend was women from different age groups, at different points in their careers, sharing their trade secrets and giving sound advice. It was mentorship on steroids.
