'Utah Biomes' on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 191

Utah is a wildly diverse place. Ecological and biological diversity are usually tied to an abundance of water; but here in Utah, despite our relative lack of the wet stuff, we boast of at least nine unique biomes spanning from the low-elevation Mojave Desert around St. George to the high Alpine Tundra of our many snowcapped mountain ranges. You can think of a biome as a large community of similar organisms and climates or a collection of similar habitats.

'Beaver Creek Greenback Cutthroat Trout' on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 207

In 2009, officials from the US Division of Wildlife Resources who were out searching for isolated populations of Colorado River Cutthroat Trout found something better—and far more perplexing. Within a 1.2-mile stretch of Beaver Creek, which runs down the eastern flank of the La Sal Mountains near Moab, Utah, surveyors discovered a small, but genetically pure population of a subspecies of Cutthroat Trout known as the Greenback. The fish is not only rare among its fellow Cutthroats; it was

'Spring Testosterone' on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 225

Love is in the air! While shoveling snow, it seems a bit ludicrous to say “spring has arrived”, but here it is! I first noticed it 3 weeks ago when a burst of house finch tumbling notes filled the vapors. That was followed by a robin dusting of some rusty phrases which will soon be heard across the mid latitudes of N. America.

'Seventh Generation: How Can We Protect Our Resources' on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 217

There are some people who think that trees are merely green things that stand in their way. And there are some people who believe that life should be lived to its fullest without regards to future generations, or even their neighbors.

'The Canyon' on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 241

Here it’s just called, The Canyon, like there is no other. It’s a place we go to get away from, or get into, it. It’s a place that still lets us trust each other’s word, and have plans on when we should be back. For those waiting on The Canyon, we practice patience and balance with our expectations.

Utah's Exotic Invasive Species on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 235

“Exotic”, sounds rather alluring, but “invasive” implies something completely different and undesirable.

The Henry Mountain Bison on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 208

The Henry Mountains of southeast Utah are famous for being the last mountain range in the contiguous United States to have been officially mapped. Indeed, before they were mapped, they were often referred to as the “Unknown Mountains.” Another relative unknown detail about this range is that it harbors one of only five genetically pure, free-roaming bison herds on North American public lands.

Clark’s Nutcracker on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 236

Skiing a few miles into a lovely northern Utah canyon in frigid, single-digit temperatures I was startled by an abrasive sound rolling downslope from a thick cover of conifers. A Clark’s nutcracker! My spirits were warmed by several degrees.

Winter Bird Feeding on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 240

This time of year, we see a cast of characters flying among the trees and bushes as they search for food and a place to nestle to conserve warmth and energy.

Dinosaur National Monument on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 241

My last WAU described the glories of the Colorado Plateau, to which I must return. The very northern reach of the plateau intersects the mighty Uintah Mountains and the Uintah Basin.

Enjoying Utah’s Backcountry With Snowmobiles on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 240

Utah’s deep snow and hundreds of miles of publicly accessible groomed trails make snowmobiling an ideal way for individuals and families to experience the state’s backcountry.

Most people enjoy watching birds, except for their occasional deposits on cars or windows. In an earlier program, I mentioned at least fifteen benefits that birds provide to humans and planet Earth. But as human population and developments increase, the survival of many bird species becomes threatened.

The Colorado Plateau on Wild About Utah | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 222

Rivers and sandstone pretty much define the Colorado Plateau- perhaps my favorite landscape on our lovely planet. These past few weeks I’ve experienced some of its best in Dinosaur NM and Canyonlands NP with friends and students.
