When I was younger and the film Lord of War, with Nicolas Cage and Jared Leto, was coming out, the trailers made it seem as though the movie was an action comedy. And while there were moments of levity in film, due to the absurdity and extreme nature of being gun runners, the actual opening of the film was a sequence that followed the creation of a bullet all the way to the point where it was used to kill someone, and was very effective at setting the tone for the rest of the movie. I did end up enjoying the movie quite a bit, but it will always stand out as a movie I was basically tricked into seeing. Have any of you guys experienced this as well with other films? Can't wait to hear your stories. Keep up the great work”   Check out

The second season of Romanze Criminale is almost a masterpiece and peak Italian TV, was directed by the same director of Soldado. And if I recommend something, the first thing they ask is "are a lot of people seeing it?" If my answer is no, the reply 90% of the time is, "screw that, it must not be good." So yes, the general public, in my experience, does indeed decide if they're going to see a movie based on its popularity. Going back to your convo last week, the other question I get asked is "Do you have the rotten tomatoes scores printed?" (We don't). People are becoming MUCH more aware of rotten tomatoes scores, and I can even tell you how many refunds I've had to give for people walking out of Mother, screaming at me that rotten tomatoes lied. Back when I was in college, I managed a movie theater that played more indie/foreign fare, and NONE of these questions arose.”   In the News:   ‘Sicario’ Sequel ‘Soldado’ is “More Severe” and “Extremely Emotional,” Says Josh Brolin LOL: Idris Elba Thinks a ‘Dark Tower’ Sequel Might Happen Saw Gerrera Returns to ‘Star Wars Rebels’ Next Week; Watch a Clip From ‘In the Name of the Rebellion’ David Fincher Explains The Problem With Modern Movies   In the Spoiler Room,

Yes, a great movie will be great regardless, but avoiding spoilers is about the experience. (shocked by spoiler moment in IT) Knowing that in advance wouldn't have ruined the movie, but it would have changed how I felt while watching it. Yes that was just a moment but how many moments does it take for a good movie to turn great?      Logan in Seattle writes in: “I used to think less was more, not ignoring trailers completely, but not watching more than one for a film. Now I see what you mean by enjoying the lead up as part of the journey to the film, instead of as a separate experience. I'm not a STAR WARS super fan, but I love the buzz of this industry of film so much that I can't help but be sucked into the vortex surrounding something as massive as this. So last night I watched the trailer multiple times and listened to your emergency coverage of it. Now I understand. Now I too am fully invested in all the theories and news that may come over the coming months.   Stephen from San Francisco writes: “As you've discussed in the modern info era it is hard to stay "clean" as Rian Johnson states.  (he didnt want to watch but watched) 2 minutes later and I find myself feeling anxious/frustrated that maybe I had just seen too much...   Do you think The Last Jedi trailer showed to much of the story progression? Especially with the Rey v Stoke scream and Kylo reaching out for Rey scene? Do you think when something this large goes out it is impossible to stay "clean" in a world were even my grandma calls to ask if I saw it? Am I crazy for even feeling like this?   To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to

Movie Trailers That Spoil Big Twists, Guardians, Fantastic Beasts, Spider-Man, Fast and Furious, Pacific Rim | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:39:10

And in the Mailbag, we talk about trailers that ruined big twists in movies.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).   In the News: No, The Characters in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Aren’t Speaking English Jessica Williams Joins ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel; Nicolas Flamel and More Are Cast Disneyland ‘Spider-Man’ Ride Revealed In New Patents   Disney Plans to Produce Original Content for Their Streaming Service ‘Fast and Furious’ Spin-Off with Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham Arrives in 2019; Shane Black Could Direct ‘Pacific Rim Uprising’ Trailer: John Boyega Leads a New Generation of Jaeger Pilots   In The Mailbag: Ed in St. Paul, Minnesota writes in “Your spoiler conversation had me think of a story from this summer.  I showed my 11 year old son and 12 year old daughter (both massive budding film geeks) the first 2 Terminator movies.  They really liked the first, and we watched T2 a couple days later.   Leading up to T2, I didn't let them watch a trailer, or even read the back of the DVD packaging.  I brought them into it cold.  They had no idea that Arnold's Terminator was going to be a good guy.  When he protects John for the first time in the shopping mall, and fights the T-1000, their jaws dropped.  They were shocked.  My son jumped up with his hands in the air and started running around yelling "YES! YES! YES!"  (Guess what he's going to be for Halloween this year?)   The "twist" that Arnold was a good guy was thrilling for them, and they loved it.  Great experience for them. The funny thing is, I was 16 when T2 came out, is that this wasn't ever a "twist".  Everybody knew when they saw T2 that Arnold was the good guy.  I don't think a single person in 1991 walked into the theater without knowing that.  Cameron does structure it so that it could be a surprise.  He doesn't give it away, although if you really think about the biker bar scene it's pretty obvious.  But knowing the twist didn't diminish the enjoyment or love of the movie.  It's always been one of my favorite action movies of all time. But in terms of your conversation about coming into the movie "pure", this is an example of some real benefit and joy that came from that.  Knowing the twist (that wasn't really a twist) didn't ruin the movie for anyone, but man did it add to the experience for them.   Can you think of any other "twists" that everybody knew about going in, where the movie could of benefited from viewers coming in blind?”   Peter’s Picks: Castaway, Terminator Salvation and Terminator: Genysis, (Passengers on the ot

Is Seeing A Movie “Unsullied” Really A Better Experience? Netflix, Westworld, V For Vendetta, Fast 9, Frankenstein | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: 00:42:58

On the October 6, 2017 episode of /Film Daily, Peter Sciretta is joined by Hoai-Tran Bui and Brad Oman to talk about the latest news including Netflix prices, Westworld season 2, V For Vendetta the tv series, Tyrese and the delay for Fast 9, and Bride of Frankenstein has been postponed, is the Dark Universe dead? And in the Mail Bag, we address some questions that arose from our discussion about spoilers on yesterday’s podcast.   You can subscribe to /Film Daily on iTunes, Google Play, Overcast and all the popular podcast apps (here is the RSS URL if you need it).   In the News: Netflix isRaising Its Prices Again ‘Westworld’ Season 2 May Introduce More Parks, is Still Confusing Ed Harris ‘V For Vendetta’ May Become a TV Series Tyrese Blames The Rock For ‘Fast 9’ Delay on Instagram ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ Postponed; Is the Dark Universe Dead?   In The Mailbag: Sherwin V from the Bay Area writes “Regarding the podcast on the Rise of Spoiler Culture, I was a bit surprised on your stance on the matter. However, given that you cover film news, spoilers come with the territory of the job so I do understand how you might have developed into that position.  I feel that there were 2 topics discussed and should be treated separately from each other.  1: The film is no good if you know key elements of it going in.  I agree with both you and HT that the quality of the film doesn't change. A well crafted film is what it is. Spoilers do not change that.   However...  Keeping a lid on spoilers is about preserving the experience, which lead to:   2: Knowing a death or twist is coming doesn't matter. Disagree with this completely. Knowing major elements going into a film changes how you view the movie. The context changes. Watching The Sixth Sense a second time after you know the twist, is a totally different experience. Rather than watching things unfold, you're instead watching for clues/interactions as to how the twist works or is justified. Circling back to preserving the experience...  Magic. I know you are a huge fan of magic and practice it.  How would you feel if the veil of secrecy around every single magic trick that exists was lifted?  Would it still be magic if the whole audience knew what was coming or how it was done? Sure, if done well, it's still a great trick as with a great film. When the viewer knows what's coming though, the wonder and magic are just less special.   Would love to hear your thoughts on this, whether by podcast response or reply email.”   To submit questions to the mailbag, send them to peter@slashfilm.com.
