The Type A Creative
Summary: What is the Type A Creative? I'm so glad you asked! The Type A Creative is a podcast for driven creatives. For a long time, when I thought of the word “artist” I usually thought of a painter — someone floaty and magical, absorbed in their own world of art. But, I’m not like that. Yes, I’m a writer and designer. But I’ve got a business brain and some monster-sized ambition to match. For years I’ve been running a business and building a career around my creative skills. But now, I’m also working to cultivate a creative practice that's not necessarily for sale, for a client, or to fulfill some ambition. I'm out to have some "creativity for keeps." As driven people, we often have a hard time believing this kind of creativity is "worth it." We sneakily talk ourselves into thinking it has to turn into a business, otherwise, it's indulgent, or simply not worth our time. I'm looking for a bit of inner peace between my driven entrepreneur and my inner artist. My question for myself, and hopefully all of you is, "How do we balance a life where we want BOTH? Both creativity and art, but also big career goals?" In this podcast, I talk to people who are starting new creative projects, have thriving creative projects, and have conversations with a rotating cast of my smart friends — from fellow bosses to creative directors and working writers, filmmakers, and artist. Together we have conversations about what it is to be both Type A and creative.

In this episode Jay Sherer and Jenni talk about the point of art — who is it for, and how do we know when we’re doing a good job? Jay’s view toward art is almost philosophical, and he brings a sociological, political and spiritual lens to why we need to create meaningful work and push for larger impact with our creations.
One of the things about being a creative in business is that as your business grows, so does your relationship to the work. Growing a team can mean that you might not be opening the files as open often as you once were. Today on the show I have Kathleen Shannon, a creative powerhouse, talking about how she’s grown, established good teams, hired other creatives, and managed creatives.
As people we grow and change, but as a Type A - stepping out into the unknown and taking a risk can be really scary, especially if we don’t understand how to organize it, define it and structure it. On this episode, we’re talking to motivational speaker Kathlyn Hart about to evolve a career, and the steps she’s taking as she’s in the middle of her own career evolution.
When most of us think of a creative practice, it’s tempting to imagine sitting in a beautiful room, painting the hours away, or lost in writing. But if you’re a mom you know that’s basically a joke. On this episode, Erica, Jackie and I discuss what it’s really like to be a working professional + mom + fighting for a creative practice.
Raise your hand if you’ve had burn out. Oh, that’s right ALL OF US Type A Creatives. We have had all piled our plates too high and created some serious burn out in our lives. Today on the show I have my friends Erica Kelly and Sophia Mavrides talking about what it is to face crazy long hours, not take breaks, emailing on weekends, and having boundaries for your day job that can really hurt not only creativity but our overall happiness.
UGH, perfectionism can be the death of our creative projects. A lot of us Type A Creatives have a good dose of perfectionism that keeps us from creating good work or showing up in the world as our whole selves. Today I’m chatting with Misty Bradley, photographer, and coach about how perfectionism shows up in our lives, and why it’s so hard to fight it.

Pitching your work as a creative is one of the hardest parts. Today on the show I have stunt actors and performers, Jason Brown and Autumn Thomas, talking about what it is to be an artist that is making their living through their performance art, pitching themselves, and what it’s like to be a working artist.
Each and every one of us live in a world where we have to sing for our supper. As artists, whether we are full time or part time in our artistic passions, has to find a way to pay the rent and put gas in our cars. On today’s episode, I have Elle Luna talking about the realities of being a working artist, how the concept of money can influence your work (or not influence), and when to know if monetization is a good idea or not.
Becca Piastrelli and Megan Flatt are two bomb women who are kicking @$$ and taking names. Becca is a creative coach and Megan is a coach to MamaCEOs. They've both built their businesses on creativity, and this episode is all about how to evolve out loud, how our Type A sides can both support and hurt our creativity, and how we as creatives can practice taking up more space (eek vulnerability!).
