Our guest this week is one third of our favourite comedy sketch troupe ‘Pappys’; it’s upper-body nudity enthusiast and massive Wolves fan, Tom Parry. The 90s were a period of medium resurgence for Wolves after a desperate period in the late 80s which saw them drop into the fourth tier of English football for the only time in their history. Spearheading that charge for Wolves was Tom Parry’s hero; Mr Steve Bull. Our guest this week is a referee who officiated more than 1200 top level matches in his career, including the Premier League, Champions League, an F.A. Cup final and internationals, one of the most recognisable refs of his era: Dermot Gallagher. On the show this week we’ve got comedian and broadcaster, and Nottingham’s own(!), Matt Forde to dissect the fortunes of Nottingham Forest in the 90s. When you think about Forest in the 90s, all the big names echo through the sands of time; Brian and Nigel Clough, Frank Clark, Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Andrea Silenzi, Stuart Pearce, Stan Collymore and Bryan Roy - the list goes on and on. But the one big name ever-present at both the City Ground and the training ground throughout the 90s turns out to be… Matt Forde. Through Matt’s eyes we take a nostalgic tour from Brian Clough in the changing room, to punching Ryan Giggs in the tunnel to being lambasted by Steve Chettle, only to bury the hatchet twenty years later. This week comedian Ivo Graham joins us in the studio as we focus solely on one of British literature’s greatest authors; not “old Bill Shakespeare”, but former Manchester United captain Steve Bruce. If you wander into your local book shop and head straight for the classics, it’s almost certain you won’t be confronted with the sacred text ‘Striker’ by Steve Bruce. So unlikely a career choice was it for Steve Bruce to have turned to crime fiction, that for many years, people refused to believe Steve Bruce had written it. The book is not autobiographical. Instead, it focuses on a Newcastle born football manager called ‘Steve Barnes’ who recently turned to management after retiring at ‘Mulcaster United’. Obviously, a massive literary stretch for the real-life Steve Bruce. We also discuss Steve’s short-lived TV show ‘Captain’s Log’. This week comedian Nish Kumar joins us in the ‘Quickly Kevin…’ studio to discuss ‘Premier Passions’, the documentary series following Sunderland and then manager Peter Reid’s retrospectively harrowing attempt to establish the club as a Premier League force in the late 90’s. A fly on the wall look at how precisely NOT to run a football club, where boardroom level concerns about bathroom fixtures and Terence Conran designed stadium interiors took precedent over signing a striker capable of competing in the highest division. There are, unsurprisingly, more lows than highs, as the aspirations of club, manager and fans slowly turn to dread with the same traumatically inevitable sense of doom one gets from watching Denis Irwin and Brian McClair double teaming David Busst circa 1996. But only just…. There is also an unbelievable story about 90’s legend and Dube maestro Dion Dublin crossing paths with perennial landfill-indie whipping boys, Toploader. Efan Ekoku makes an obligatory (blink and you’ll miss it) cameo mention, plus all the usual correspondence, features, and items you’ve come to endure like the squad player nobody is ever excited to see warming up on the side-lines.
