Podcast #108: Welcome Back Joel! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to the Stack Overflow podcast #108 recorded Thursday, May 4, 2017 at Stack Overflow HQ in NYC. Today’s podcast is brought to you by peanut butter and Stack Overflow Enterprise. Visit stackoverflowbusiness.com for more details. In today's episode: Joel is back! After a month-long surgery hiatus, Joel is back to talk about how much better the podcast is when he's gone. There also may be some ranting about hospitals and the Apple Health app. The right way to pronounce "hummus.” Our Developer Story is prolific programmer and author Sarah Drasner, whose full biography is too numerous to list here (However Jay does try to say them all, more info in links below). She tells us all about how she got into programming and design, and she explains to a very excited David the awesomeness that is SVG animation and CodePen. Have you ever wanted to ask Joel a question? Now's your chance! Tweet your question to @stackpodcast and he will choose a few to answer on his next episode. Feel free to ask him about 30 Rock, as he just binged the entire series. This week's Stack Overflow Constitution question is: Should you throw away the sub-liner on yogurt and hummus containers? Listen to what the hosts have to say and chime in with your own answers by tweeting to us using #stackoverflowpodcast. Answer with PRO if you throw the sub-liner away, or CON if you think that you should leave the subliner on for that extra bit of protection. The winner will be the answer that make us giggle the most and can be from the winning or losing side. Last week's winner, for the totally clear and not-at-all confusing question, "On what day of the week does 'this weekend' and 'next weekend' mean something different?" is: https://twitter.com/_tbirrell/status/859120346921926656 Congrats Timothy, you get brand new Stack Overflow Podcast branded stickers!  Podcast #107: We’re Just Trying to be Non-Terrible | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to The Stack Overflow Podcast #107 recorded Thursday, April 27, 2017 at Stack Overflow HQ in NYC, where rats were invented! Anil Dash, CEO of Fog Creek and all around great guy, is joining us again. Probably only so that he can talk about Glitch and how amazing it is! (It is though, you should try it...) Today's shenanigans include: Special guests Jess Lee and Ben Halpern from the Practical Dev are in the studio to tell us all about their Developer Stories and journey to dev.to. Ben Halpern's website is a work of art that you must see to believe. Note: have your sound on. You're welcome. Ilana explains the need for Shabbat elevators in David's One Minute Tech Review. I have no idea how David has lived in NY for years and is just now learning about Shabbat elevators. Jay's Rant is all about hotel environmental pretenses but it somehow devolves into Anil calling Alpha Flight "bootleg X-Men." Don't @ me, Canada! Failure is Always an Option! We all make mistakes, and that is perfectly OK. Our very own Matt Sherman joins us to talk about programming and professional mistakes, and how we deal with them at SO. The gang then chimes in with their own. Some are funny, some are just dumb… David. We ask: Are all AI's bound to be racist? This week's Constitutional amendment is bit confusing, yet vital. Proposed by @paulmorriss: "On what day of the week does 'this weekend' and 'next weekend' mean something different?" Listen to what the hosts have to say and then post your answer to twitter using #stackoverflowpodcast. Vote PRO if you think that when one says "this weekend" they are referring to the upcoming weekend and next weekend is the weekend after this weekend. Vote CON if you think basically anything different from PRO. Is that clear? Good. I thought so... We will choose the winner from either team, it just needs to make us laugh, and Ilana will send you stickers (not a bic 4-color pen!). Last week's winners are @haikusbyisaac and @oddswithreality with their joint tweets (open this in a new tab for the full brilliance): https://twitter.com/HaikusByIsaac/status/857236064334905344 Thanks for listening!  Podcast #106: Data Team Assemble! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome back to the Stack Overflow podcast episode #106 recorded live on Thursday, April 20th at SO headquarters in NYC. We are honored to have Anil Dash, CEO of Fog Creek, leading today's antics while Joel is away. We are also joined by the entire SO Data Team; Kevin Montrose, Jason Punyon, Dr Julia Silge, Nick Larsen, and Dr Dave Robinson. In today's episode you will find mystery, intrigue, and mangoes! As well as... Kevin drinks two whole unicorn fraps. Jay rants about the people who rant about babies on planes. The data team waxes poetic about… data! Specifically, how we use the data from SO to solve problems and help more users find relevant jobs. They also talk about what we don't do with your data. Namely, anything creepy. Dr Dave Robinson's recent blog post "What programming languages are used late at night?" Spoiler alert: Haskell is so hot right now. Nick Larsen is a Rocketeer! (Rocketeur?) Proof:        Facebook tries to combat fake news while we play a new game. As you know, we are still preparing a constitution for Stack Overflow where we pose a new amendment each week and you answer us with Pro or Con. Last week we asked: "When you say that you are going to 'table' a topic, does that mean that you are going to talk about it now, or that you are not going to talk about it at all?" It's 82% CON! To Table a discussion means that you will NOT talk about it at all. The winning tweet however, was Tom Eldridge with: https://twitter.com/Tom_Eldridge/status/844609948004737025 Congrats Tom, you get stickers! This week's amendment was proposed by twitter user Asger (@oddswithreality): When replying to an email, you cannot reply inline. You must always add your reply above the quoted text. Post your thoughts to twitter using #StackOverflowPodcast along with PRO if you agree that you should always reply above the quoted text or CON if you think that inline replies are just fine and dandy. Give a funny explanation and you could be next week's winner! The winner does not have to be from the winning team, it just has to make us giggle. Note: We will not be sending the winner lightbulbs. You get some still amazing but unfortunately not luminescent stickers. Stop promising people lightbulbs, Jay! Links for the lazy: Follow the data team on twitter! They are all really interesting, even Punyon. @kevinmontrose, @jasonpunyon, @juliasilge, @fody, @drob Dr Dave and Dr Julia's recent blog posts.  Podcast #105: The Wait is Over! Developer Survey 2017 results are in. | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

There are only a few things that you need to know about today's episode: Joel is away so Jay has taken over the podcast using Stack Overflow's new patented JoelBots™ technology. We are joined by data scientists Dr. Julia Silge and Dr. Dave Robinson to talk about some of the most interesting and fun questions from this year's Developer Survey. Over 64,000 developers responded to questions like "What languages would you like to stop using?" and "What fictional programmer is the most annoying/realistic/inspirational?" (And why is the answer to all three "Mr. Robot"?) Apparently I was the only person in a room chock full -o- nerds that has seen the masterpiece that is Kung Fury. If you have also not seen it, do yourself a favor and click that link. This week's constitution question: Pro or Con - When you say that you are going to "table" a topic, does that mean that you are going to talk about it now, or that you are not going to talk about it at all? Answer PRO if you think that it means to discuss it now, or CON if it means that you are not going to talk about it. Post your answer to twitter using the hashtag #StackOverflowPodcast, with either PRO or CON and your explanation (in this case, keep it short but blonde, just like Jay!). The best explanation, whether on the winning or losing side, will be read on next week’s podcast and win a fabulous Stack Overflow sticker courtesy of the Stack Overflow Podcast. Last week's winner: https://twitter.com/_villasv/status/841976199031193600 Congratulations! You get 2 stickers because Jay is drunk with power. This week's links: Developer Survey Results!  Stack Overflow Podcast #104 – Jenn Schiffer Talks to Us about Fog Creek’s New Glitch | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to the Stack Overflow Podcast #104, recorded Thursday March 9, 2017 at the Stack Overflow HQ in NYC. Today’s podcast is brought to you by Nightmare at 20,000 Feet, the classic episode of The Twilight Zone starring William Shatner. OooOOoo scary. Today's podcast is also brought to you by Stack Overflow Jobs. In honor of Women's History Month, Stack Overflow Jobs is showcasing opportunities at companies founded by women. Go to stackoverflow.com/jobs now to level up your career. On this week's episode, we talk to engineer, artist, tech satirist and brand new Fog Creek employee Jenn Schiffer about Fog Creek's brand new community, Glitch, which launched today. Also this week, the return of Startup or Shut Up, our game where the hosts have to guess which ridiculous companies are real, and which are fake. And as you know, we are preparing a Constitution for Stack Overflow. Last week, we asked: PRO or CON: Making a sandwich for yourself... do you cut it in half? The results were cut perfectly in half, 50%-50%. But the winner is Andrew Wilkinson: https://twitter.com/andrew_j_w/status/839194647134146561 We see what you did there, Andrew. This week's Constitution question: If you’re writing an IF statement, and you’re comparing a variable to a constant, should you flip it so that you put the constant first? Post your answer to twitter using the hashtag #StackOverflowPodcast, with either PRO or CON and your explanation (in this case, PRO = yes, you flip them). The best explanation, whether on the winning side or the losing side, will be read on next week's podcast and win a fabulous STACK OVERFLOW STICKER courtesy of the Stack Overflow Podcast. Submit your ideas for future constitutional amendments, and one of them might be named after you! Post your proposed constitutional amendment to Twitter using the hashtag #StackOverflowPodcast. And if it's non-terrible, we may feature it in a future poll. Follow us on Twitter. Like us on Facebook. And if you want to make 8-bit art, check out Jenn Schiffer's tool. Ilana used it to draw the best dog cow thing I've ever seen.

Podcast #103: Grandma, is that you? | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to the Stack Overflow Podcast #103, recorded Thursday March 2, 2017 at the Stack Overflow HQ in NYC. Today's podcast is brought to you by tree people, Purim, and She Geeks Out. In today's thrilling episode: Jay is back from vacation, so of course he and Joel have to talk about toilets for way too long (consider yourself warned). He is here to talk about his long career at AT&T, as well as The ONAP Project and the future of the software industry. Dr Gilbert has been at the forefront of computer neural networks since the early 90's when he was trying to answer the question, "How do you get computers to speak like humans?" Simple, right? As you know, we are preparing a constitution for Stack Overflow! This week's question: If you are making a sandwich for yourself, do you cut it in half? PRO = Yes and CON = No. Post your answer to Twitter using the Hashtag #stackoverflowpodcast, with either PRO or CON and your short but meaty explanation in 140 characters or less. The best explanation, whether on the winning side or the losing side, will be read on next week’s podcast and win a fabulous STACK OVERFLOW STICKER courtesy of the Stack Overflow Podcast. Also, you can submit your ideas for future constitutional amendments on Twitter using #StackOverflowPodcast, and one of them might be named after you. SHA-1: You can depend on it. Topics discussed this week (with only minor IT interruptions) include the Dell XPS-13, Macbook Pro touch bars, and ugh, Uber… Our special guest this week is Erica Brescia, co-founder and COO at Bitnami. She speaks to us about her passion for dev tools as well as the challenges of being a predominantly remote company (something that SO knows a little bit about). Also, castle retreats? Yes please. In our ongoing commitment to drafting the Stack Overflow Constitution, this week's amendment proposal comes from David: PRO or CON: Should you have a 50 character max for the first line of your commit message? Listen to the hosts' thoughts and then post your answer to Twitter using the Hashtag #StackOverflowPodcast with either PRO (in 50 characters or less!) or CON (using up to 140 characters). It's @codinghorror himself, Mr Jeff Atwood! Jeff and Joel chat about where we came from and where we are going, including clips from past podcasts. If you care at all about SO history, then this episode is a must-listen. You may also learn a little too much (or not enough?) about how to be a juggalo... "Ultimately, [answering] the best questions are kind-of a form of storytelling, and that is what we were trying to get to. You can go and take 5 minutes out of your day, look at some semi-interesting Stack Overflow question and share some knowledge...it's a good feeling." Jeff Atwood "Computing is just typing words into boxes." - also Jeff Atwood This week's SO Constitution question: When driving with a friend, is it ok to ask that friend to get out and direct you while parallel parking?  Podcast #98: Scott Hanselman Is Better Than Us at Everything | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Happy New Year and welcome to the Stack Overflow podcast #98 recorded Thursday, January 12, 2017 at the Stack Overflow Headquarters in NYC. Today's broadcast is brought to you by Sydney, Australia. If there are any Australian listeners left after Joel's terrible accent, thank you and we're sorry. In this episode: Joel rants about travel for the first time ever; Jay explains the Developer Survey (launched last week); and the hosts ponder the reason for Connecticut's existence. This week's Developer Story is prolific programmer, teacher, writer, podcaster and so much more: Scott Hanselman! In his 3rd appearance on the podcast, Scott recounts some of the earliest inspirations that helped take his life from being "voted most likely to be convicted of white-collar crime" to the success that he is today. Just some of his great advice to us about helping the next generation: "Stuff that you might be doing alone, find a kid and do it with that kid. Include them in soldering or in chopping down a tree or putting together a square-foot garden in the backyard. Those are all gifts that we can give to people moving forward." As you know, we're preparing a constitution for Stack Overflow. Each week, we bring you a proposal, and you, our listeners, will decide on whether that proposal becomes a part of our new constitution. This week's question: Is it sufficient to close a bug as NOT REPRO or do you have to write some kind of explanation? Listen to the opinions of the hosts, and then post your answer to Twitter using the hashtag #stackoverflowpodcast, with either PRO if yay, or CON if nay, along with your explanation. Keep it short! The funniest explanation, whether winning or losing, will be read on next week's podcast and win an awesome Stack Overflow Sticker. We also need new amendments, so tweet us your ideas and we could name an amendment after you! Last week's winner, answering the question: The Simonyi Amendment, Shall we bring back Hungarian Notation? Is: "YAY but only the real Hungarian notation. Semantics based instead of type based. In Hungarian instead of English." Thanks @inka22222, you win a thing! Week Links: Quark Conference India - Joel will be there if he can navigate the dropdown boxes.  Podcast #97: Where Did You Get That Hat?! | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to the Stack Overflow Podcast #97 recorded Thursday, December 15 at the Stack Overflow Headquarters in NYC, home to the some of the crappiest airports in the western Hemisphere (Yup, Joel talks about travel in this episode). Today's show is brought to you by Mott St. Get anything that you want (really, anything) for only 99¢! Joel's rant today: Turns out, Jeff Atwood was right! Joel was FINALLY on an episode of This Week in Tech (TWiT) Episode 277, enabling him to cross off the only thing that Jeff put on Joel's to-do list all those years ago. Better late than never, Coding Horror... Today (Dec 19) is a very special day: It's the start of Winter Bash! The season of Hats! To celebrate, our hosts chat with Stack Overflow Community Manager Bluefeet about the making of Winter Bash and what the users can expect for the next few weeks, as well as how she fell into programming and then Stack Overflow. Moral of the story? "Never quit late." Thanks, Jay. David also very modestly takes credit for the whole idea while recounting the history of "Hat Dash". There's even a totally real and not at all silly documentary! There are 28 known hats as well as a few secret hats that users will have to find on their own. Winter Bash runs December 19 - January 9th on (almost) all Stack Exchange sites. How many hats can you collect? This week's Developer Story is Dan Luu, senior engineer at Microsoft and prolific blogger at DanLuu.com. He and Jay discuss Dan's blog post called Developer Hiring and the Market for Lemons that challenges Joel's 2006 blog post Finding Great Developers. "Hardware tools are really really bad... so you can get a lot of value in writing your own, only somewhat crappy tools… it's a very slow process." This week's constitution question: The Simonyi Amendment, Shall we bring back Hungarian Notation? Post your answer to Twitter using the hashtag #stackoverflowpodcast, with either PRO if yay, or CON if nay, along with your explanation. Keep it short but thick! The funniest explanation, whether winning or losing, will be read on next week's podcast and win an awesome STACK OVERFLOW STICKER.  Podcast #96: A Face Full of Code | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to the Stack Overflow Podcast #96 recorded on December 8, 2016 at the Stack Overflow headquarters in the jackhammer capital of the world (probably), NYC. Today's podcast is brought to you by the Pizza Saver, otherwise known as the small table thingie that keeps your pizza from sticking to the top of the box. It is also brought to you by IBM Watson. What does a world with IBM Watson look like? With Watson, the world is getting healthier, safer, cleaner, more creative and even more personal. That's cognitive that matters. Welcome to the IBM Watson world. For today's shenanigans, we are so lucky to have guest host (as well as new Fog Creek CEO and close friend of Stack Overflow) Anil Dash, who rightfully mocks Joel's recent keynote at Slush 2016 in Helsinki. If you watch the video here, you will understand this reference: Thanks @balpha Joel and Anil talk about the past, present, and future of Fog Creek and it's ties to the origins of Stack Overflow and Trello, as well as the amazing new GoMix (formerly Hyperdev) app building software. So what's been the hardest part of taking over Fog Creek? Figuring out where to sit in the lunchroom every day during mandatory lunches! Duh. Seriously though, culture is such an important part the company's success and Anil is committed to preserving that culture so that Fog Creek can continue to "help ordinary people make extraordinary things on the Internet." Along with Anil we have special guest Dr. Dave Robinson, data scientist at Stack Overflow, discussing a few of his recent popular blog posts concerning analysis of software developers in New York, San Francisco, London and Bangalore, (over 60k views) and the now infamous analysis of Trump's Tweets (over half a million views in the first week!). We apologize in advance to Android users. I'm sure you're not all angry… This week's constitution question: Is it pronounced GIF with a hard G /ɡif/ or GIF with a J /jif/? I can't believe that we are opening this can of worms, but hey, the world is crazy right now, so why not? Post your answer to Twitter using the hashtag #stackoverflowpodcast, with either PRO if yay, or CON if nay, along with your explanation. Keep it short but convincing! The funniest explanation, whether winning or losing, will be read on next week's podcast and win a fabulous STACK OVERFLOW STICKER. We also need new amendments, so tweet us your ideas and we could name an amendment after you! Last week's winner, with an answer to the question, "Is it ok to get a mechanical keyboard with loud 'clicky' keys when you are sharing an office?" AKA The Punyon Amendment, is Brian with: "PRO because they shouldn't be able to hear the keyboard over my trap music." -@TheBestHuman Congrats Brian, you won a thing!  Podcast #95: Shakespearean SQL Server | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Welcome to the Stack Overflow Podcast #95 recorded Thursday, November 17, 2016 at Stack Overflow HQ in NYC. Our sponsor today is double-entry bookkeeping. Invented in 1494 in Milan by Leonardo da Vinci's lover, probably. Conveniently enough, that's Jay's new title! In this week's rant, the gang discusses Microsoft Connect(); // 2016 where Channel 9 premiered a video featuring our very own David Fullerton, George Beech, and Nick Craver in which they discuss SQL Server and how it impacts Stack Overflow Enterprise. Also, Microsoft has now joined the Linux Foundation; Google has joined the .Net steering committee; and Visual Studio is available for Mac. What?!? We are now officially living in the Upside Down. Our Developer Story today is Jewelbots CEO (and friend to Stack Overflow) Sara Rey Chipps! Jewelbots (launching this week!) are programmable friendship bracelets designed to spark girls’ (and boys’!) interest in coding. Jewelbots are the first of their kind - an open source wearable device where kids dictate the functionality. Sara and Jay discuss the importance of making programmable things that girls are actually interested in instead of just taking a pre-existing product and turning it pink, as well as the challenges of actually making hardware. "Physics are real." Additionally, we have a One-Minute Tech Review (it's the new Macbook Pro 2016 and Joel has a lot to say about that missing ESC key, among other new "features") and another installment of "Startup or Shut Up" where spoiler alert Jay actually gets one right! This week's constitution question is: Is it ok to get a mechanical keyboard with loud "clicky" keys when you are sharing an office? This is called the Jason Punyon amendment, because of reasons. Post your answer to Twitter using the hashtag #stackoverflowpodcast, with either PRO if yay, or CON if nay, along with your explanation. Keep it short but convincing! The funniest explanation, whether on the winning side or the losing side, will be read on next week's podcast and win a fabulous STACK OVERFLOW STICKER. We also need new amendments, so tweet us your ideas and we could name an amendment after you! Last week's winner, replying to the question "Should you be allowed to comment out code and check it in?" is @Joe_Stetch! "CON, this dark road leads to being featured on an episode of 'Hoarders.'" - @Joe_Stetch We will not have a podcast for the next two weeks because of the holidays, but look for us the second week of December.  Stack Overflow Podcast #94 – We Don’t Care If Bret Is Famous | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Grab a cookie (before Joel eats them all) and listen to the Stack Overflow podcast #94, recorded Thursday, November 10, 2016 at the Stack Overflow Headquarters in NYC. Today's podcast is brought to you by the Electoral College since this podcast usually loses the popular vote. Joel actually doesn't have a rant today. gasp Instead, we chat about our annual company meetup, which took place this year in the sometimes sunny Philadelphia. The gang explains why getting everyone together at least once a year is so important in such a heavily remote company. Hint: it's mainly to assure Jay to his face that no one hates him. One of the coolest things to come out of this year’s meetup was a Tiny Talk by Stack Overflow developer Bret Copeland titled "How to Land the Space Shuttle… from Space" that has gotten over 87,000 (as of 11/14) views on YouTube. He wears a flight suit and everything… This week's constitutional amendment question (along with way too much talk about stickers) is: Should you be allowed to comment out code and check it in? Jay (tries to) explain what this means while Joel and David try very hard not to laugh. Post your answer to Twitter using the hashtag #stackoverflowpodcast, with either PRO if yay, or CON if nay, along with your explanation. Keep it short but convincing! The best explanation, whether on the winning side or the losing side, will be read on next week's podcast and win a fabulous STACK OVERFLOW STICKER courtesy of the Stack Overflow Podcast. Our very special guest today, with her Developer Story, is Fereshteh Forough, the founder and executive director of Code to Inspire, which is celebrating its one year anniversary this week! It uses technology, education and outreach to support Afghan women in their fight for social, political, and economic equality. In 2015 she founded Code to Inspire, the first coding school for girls in Afghanistan, with the mission of educating Afghan women with in-demand programming skills, empower them to add unique value to their communities, and inspire them to strive for financial and social independence. "During my life journey, as a student and as a teacher in computer science, I definitely felt that there is a huge educational gap... We had students that never touched a computer and didn't know about a keyboard or mouse… Now they are at the level where they are developing a responsive website. So it's amazing to see how resources and providing this situation for women can really change their lives." - Fereshteh Forough Thanks and see you next week!
