Sometimes I struggle with what to write about, because I've lived here on this farm for so long I think everybody should know everything about farming and this kind of lifestyle.  But, in all actuality very few have an idea about what daily life is on a farm and how much of a joy and how much of a pain in the butt it can all be, literally within 15 minutes and why we do it.  Maybe a little insight will help. Good Evening Everybody, How the heck are ya?  I'm going to have to work hard to get  this one done before the day is officially over but I think I can do it.    Does everybody remember the classic show MASH?  Its one of my favorites.  I loved the banter back and forth between characters. My favorite character was Sherman T Potter, Col. Probably cause he was a farm boy and rode horses and I thought his plain spoken humor was damn funny. How can "Buffalo Bagels and Mule Fritters" not be funny? It wasn't till much later that I figured out just how left leaning and liberal that show really was.  But in the fog of my youth, I couldn't find a better show to watch. Even though those characters fought and fought with each other, they could always count on each other in the end. If you remember Major Frank Burns, you can remember how much of a nitwit his character was. He was overly complicit to whatever he thought the government or army might want. Do you remember one of his famous sayings? "Individuality is great, as long as we all do it together!" He and Hawkeye and Trapper and later B.J. fought tooth and nail, but as in all great shows when the chips were down and you needed backup, they could always count on each other.  They, for better or worse knew their circle. For the hardcore MASH fans, did you get the 'know your enema" reference? Now their circumstances were a little different.  They had to count on each other or people died in their storyline, but you understand the point I'm making. How Environmental Factors Affect The Human Race And The Animal World Here is to better intentions.  We were driving to Dodge yesterday and my wife and I were talking about how things were just better back in "the good ole days".  How people were better people, how animals seemed to be better and that conversation has inspired this show and post, so here we go. If you are involved in agriculture think about this one.  Production has went up across the board in our industry.  Yields on grains have skyrocketed in the past 20 years. Milk production has went up in dairies. Genetics have changed and animals grow faster and more efficiently.  All these changes have been good in my opinion.  They had to be made so we could continue to feed the ever growing world. But to get these gains we have also lost some things as well. Animals are not as sound as they used to be.  Their productive lives are shortened.  Even a lot of all natural layer operations that have their flocks outside on grass are only keeping them for one year because their egg production starts to decline after that. Now think about the same thing in the human race today.  We are generally weaker then we use to be.  Everything offends us. Peoples opinions make us run for safe spaces with crayons, a blanket and a cookie. Nobody wants to work hard or stand up for what we know is right. A little about Tom he started out as a Boy Scout learning how to camp as a young child made it almost all the way to Eagle Scout before quitting due to work commitments. An avid camper and fisherman all his life studied all aspects of survival skills, plants, their origins how they are harvested. Including what parts of them to use for what ailment or food.
