In 1996 an old friend of his - dick day - died and he decided that he had to do something useful with his life. Alex spent the first 20 years of his career as a mechanical and agricultural engineer including 6 years in tanzania doing appropriate technology. He went to cambodia in 2000 to do a short volunteer project and was amazed to find out how much material there was but how difficult it was to find especially when your band width is low.
