Bringing Joy Back into the Family - Ep 333 by Dr. Brad Reedy
Dr. Reedy talks about how understanding trust as a choice is helpful vs. thinking about it as objectively earned. He suggested parents place emphasis on earning trust from children. He warns against parents feeling rushed to trust children, but encourages them to set boundaries rather than heaping on guilt and shame.
Guest host Judith Sadora, L.M.F.T. welcomes renowned thinker Angela Tucker to the podcast. They discuss transracial adoption and centering the adoptee. They talk about how adoptees carry trauma along with any gratitude they have for their adoptive parents. Angela gives her thoughts about transracial adoption and the responsibility of white parents who adopt children of color.
Dr. Reedy takes questions from audience members. Topics discussed include attachment with neurologically atypical children, how we can set boundaries without appearing selfish, and how to cope with loss (or missing a child in treatment).
Dr. Reedy talks trauma, trauma responses, and how the brain works. He explains how we discover our historical trauma by looking at our fight/flight responses and tracing them back. Flexible responses are contrasted with trauma-based, rigid, knee-jerk, reactive responses.
Dr. Reedy talks about healthy detachment, boundaries, and letting-go of outcomes. He points out that healthy detachment is synonymous with healthy attachment and that to move away from codependency, we must be willing to do battle with our guilt.
Dr. Reedy talks about preparing for your children coming home after treatment. He explains the principles of a good behavioral contract; he also talks about the value and the pitfalls of contracts.
