Show Notes: In this episode, Farm Commons Staff Attorney Sarah Vaile shares the menu of financial relief options farmers can pursue inside and outside of the CARES Act. We discuss programs that offer loans and grants for operating expenses for small businesses through the Paycheck Protection Program and Economic Injury Disaster Loan, as well as organizational pots of money available through American Farmland Trust, Verizon, Facebook, and others. Note that we do not cover programs that provide financial relief for individuals, such as the checks the government is going to cut to most tax-paying citizens, and the expanded unemployment assistance that will be offered, as we will cover the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program in an upcoming podcast. Show Notes: In this episode, Rachel, Sarah, and Eva discuss the legal mechanics of States' Executive Orders to "stay at home" or "shelter in place" during the COVID-19 crisis. These orders vary by state and each define which businesses are essential and allowed to operate and which are not and so therefore must close. We discuss what these distinctions might mean for farm businesses producing food crops and those producing non-edible crops, such as cut flowers, with Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Oregon state-specific examples. We also explain enforcement of these orders and the utility of letters of notice of agriculture's essential operations that states are issuing for farmers to keep on hand during the course of business.
