What Trees Can Teach Us about Being Mindful | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Trees reflect our lives through their perseverance and seasonal rhythms; always changing yet consistent. As author Alice Peck reflected on the maple tree in her backyard, she began to notice and then study its intricacies and changes. This became her regular meditation and inspiration. In her new book, Be More Tree, Alice shares what she has learned from that maple tree, and from the trees all around us. Every tree tells a complete and ongoing story; from its powerful taproots to the birds that alight on its fragile high branches. Trees reflect our lives through their perseverance and seasonal rhythms; always changing yet consistent. They evolve along a much more protracted timetable than humans. Like us, trees feel and react to their environment, and communicate with us in subtle but distinct ways. Alice suggests exploring trees from four perspectives: Roots:wisdom and understanding Branches: symbols and rituals Leaves: healing and science Seeds: transformation and spirituality All of these elements show us how, although they live outside us, trees offer a path to our inner selves. From the Bodhi Tree to the Garden of Eden, the Druids to forest monks, medicines to tire swings, people have always received physical, psychological, and spiritual sustenance from trees. Filled with insights from botany to poetry, ecology to mythology, and herbalism to sacraments, Be More Tree explores the ways these grounded yet soaring entities can steady and move us, teach and transform us, inspire and comfort us.

Fermented Foods vs. Probiotics | File Type: audio/mpeg | Duration: Unknown

Fermented foods contain probiotics, but is that enough to keep your gut healthy?Fermented foods are any foods that have been transformed by microbial means. This process also preserves the food to a degree. Fermented foods may contain beneficial enzymes, B vitamins, omega-3 fatty acids, and various strains of probiotics. Probiotics are essential for a healthy gut microbiome, and aid in digestion and immunity. Some research is linking the reduction of anxiety to use of probiotics.  It would be difficult to fulfill your probiotic needs by only eating fermented foods. Probiotic supplements can provide a higher "dose" of the healthy bacteria your gut needs to function properly.  Each probiotic strain acts uniquely and individually to help reduce the overflow of bad bacteria. Listen in as Desiree Nielsen, BSc, RD, joins Andrea and Lisa to explain the difference between fermented foods and probiotic strains, as well as why it's important to incorporate probiotics into your daily regimen.

The organization is committed to improving the physical, emotional, spiritual and economic well-being of this remarkable community of heroes, and ensuring they have the opportunity to succeed in their new mission -- a life of passion, purpose and service -- here at home. One of the ways Boulder Crest provides healing is through gardening. Veterans and their family members are able to walk the grounds, get their hands dirty, pick fresh produce, or even just reflect and meditate. For some families, this is the first time they've been able to pick food fresh from the garden.  All cabins are equipped with a kitchen so they can cook what they've just harvested. There is also a chef on staff who is able to help with questions, recipe ideas, etc.  The retreat has had people come from as far as Hawaii and Alaska. Other independent organizations often donate frequent flier miles.  There are also a variety of activities available, including kayaking, fly fishing, equine therapy, trail walking, horticulture therapy, and a rock wall for those who are physically able.  The community has been incredibly supportive of the mission of Boulder Crest. Julia Falke, who created Boulder Crest Retreat with her husband, Ken, joins Andrea and Lisa to share more about the organization and the great work its doing for our veterans.

You may think that you have to brew an entire pitcher of iced tea, but you can actually create unique flavors by the glass and create your own special recipes. Is there anything better than a nice tall glass of fresh-brewed iced tea during the dog days of summer? You may think that you have to brew an entire pitcher of iced tea, but you can actually inspire unique flavors by the glass and create your own special recipes. Cindi Bigelow, third generation President and CEO of family-owned Bigelow Tea, has the following suggestions: take two tea bags (don't have to be the same flavor). Fill cup with boiling water. Steep for a few minutes. Pour over ice.  Brewing by the glass provides for high levels of antioxidants because the tea hasn't had time to oxidize, unlike most teas that are brewed in large batches and "sit around."  Cindi also shares information about the Bigelow Tea Community Challenge (BTCC) which is held each year at the end of September to raise money for a variety of charities.
